G_B_ Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 the point about NZ is a very valid point. I saw the highlights of WI and NZ and they are the 12th man for their team. Incredible.
bones Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 They've got it right, the Aussie cricket fans know their priorities. Why waste your time on this 50 Over shyte, when you can save up for a glorious day of test cricket where Mitchell Johnson can run in bombing down bouncer after bouncer. The Aussies are not interested in ODI cricket because it's boring, unimportant and above all else lacking any of the skills you see in Tests.
bulbul Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 When OZ won world cup and camke back to Australia they used get less than 10000 people to cheer for them...Don't think any other Sports world cup winners received so lukewarmly by their country people. This is similar to 1999 WC where native people in England didn't bothered much. Only difference is England team was very bad but OZ team is one of the favorites from beginning.

The ICC should take this as a sign and strip Australia of all tournaments.

The Big Bash League has been quite a success - is that because quality of cricket in t20 is so good?
G_B_ Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 That Australia v Pak and NZ v West Indies both these QF's were like chalk and cheese. So much passion for NZ QF with the crowd right behind their team. I say give NZ Australia's T20 World Cup in 2020

Crookbond Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Cricket fatigue is another reason. I think Australia are almost playing cricket continuously for 1-1.5 years. In addition, Australia reaching the knockouts is hardly a novelty.

Also this format itself did not have sustained momentum. Long gap between matches for the same team because presence of minnows. NZ crowd is very exciting to watch though. Hope they turn up for semi final

amiret Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 From that writeup : "If one has to have a cursory look at the newspapers before and during the world cup, the footy codes have dominated the back pages, with cricket being a humble also-ran, with one page or half a page allocated to it. It’s not just championship games from the footy codes; even the pre-season NAB challenge from AFL is given more prominence than the world cup cricket. When they read out the sports news on Channel 9, it’s the scandals in NRL first, then the pre-season AFL, followed by A-league football and then the news about cricket world cup quarter finals. This cannot be right for sure, can it?" the Australian print media have allocated NRL, AFL, Rugby, A-league and Racing for 12 pages, before giving half-a-page coverage for Australia’s QF. Perhaps the Aussies prefer sports that require Athleticism than Cricket.
amiret Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 " Yes, it’s the footy season – though the AFL will not begin till the world cup is over. Yes, the Aussies don’t like to follow cricket after February. Yes, this ICC world cup is a long drawn-out mind-numbing competition which will bore even the fanatics to sleep. Yes, the Indian Cricket Council, masquerading as the International Cricket Council, is running the show in Australia, with the eyes firmly focused on its largest market, India, with the local Aussie sentiments not being respected. This includes the members of the various cricket associations, who pay a handsome annual fees for their tickets, not being granted their customary free entry to the grounds;" " The TV coverage by Star Sports India, with their Asian / Indian technology, is not up to the standards of Channel 9 / Sky Sports; The TV production team have brought in cameramen from India and South Africa, who’re struggling with the dimensions of the unknown Australian grounds, and hence, the spotty coverage; the graphics on TV coverage are garish, and cater to the lowest common denominator in India. The non-Australian games are not shown on the free-to-air Channel 9 and only on Pay TV, Foxtel, and hence, lack of mass following." :(( I don't like the garish graphics or the annoying Advts either but i can't do anything about it.

They said this world cup is 10 times bigger than the Rugby World Cup as well. Some of these assertions come from the sheer number of eyeballs from India, which allows them to get away with the apathy in other parts of the cricket world for this tournament. FIFA world cup is on Free-to-air in more than 100 countries, which is unique, and no-other sport can match that. That is a truly global game, with global following. In that sense, cricket is a tiny minority sport." kosingh Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 does any one remember what kind of attendence 92 wc had It was much better. Even though Australia was not very good then. 50 over cricket was healthier in Australia back then. Now the desi population in Australia has grown probably 10 times since 91. And without their attendance, crowds would be even more dismal this WC.
