Two of his poorest knocks in the world cup - semi and quarters - came after Kohli's cheap dismissal. He goes into a shell instead of sticking with his natural game. A new coach may be able to help him get over this mental block.
vijay50 Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Rahane's List A (117 matches) average is 35. His ODI (54 matches) average is 31. Usually most of the players ODI and List A averages are around + or -5. Usually minus.There are always exceptions. For example Kohli's List A (192 matches)average is 50.8 , where as ODI (158 matches) average is 51.47. Dhoni's List A (320 matches)average is 51.4 and ODI (262 ODIs) average is 52.46.Rohit Sharma's list A (200 matches) and ODI (135 matches) averages are almost similar at 39.2. Rahane has the game to play well outside subcontinent. He has to rotate strike well, due to lack of powerplays in the slot he bats. Based on what I saw, I think he is still trying to settle down in ODIs. We had been patient with Rohit Sharma to translate his potential to performance. I think Rahane should be persisted for another 20 ODIs to see if he improves his shortcomings and make couple of 50s. Then make a call. A chat with Dravid might help him. Karun Nair appears to have good List A average of 54.6, though the sample size is too small with 50 ODIs. I haven't seen him in Aus or Eng A tours ODIs. But somebody to consider in near future, if he can rotate strike well and also powerhit.

He has the potential to be India's Michael Clarke, which means he is not really required in ODIs. People like Karun Nair and Kedar Jadhav who have 50+ List A averages at a near 100 strike rate deserve a look in.
