Ultimate_Game Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Rahane should be in the squad as a reserve opening batsman. One of Rohit or Rahane should open the batting along with Dhawan. Both Rohit and Rahane have a similar "block or 4" style of batting and can't rotate the strike consistently even after being set, and this batting style will not work once fielding restrictions are lifted. I would bring in Kedar Jadhav as the middle order batsman to bat at 4 or 5, and look for another good middle and lower order hitter.
vvvslaxman Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Rahane is through and through classical batsman who primarily plays in the V when pitched up, square when pitched short. Not the guy who walks across wristily places the ball or drops it at feet like Gambhir and run. I don't say that is a must have attribute. But with his current range of stroke it is very difficult to rotate strike as he finds the fielders with laser guided precision. It is very easy to keep him at one end.
ShanS Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 He should be in the ODI squad. No.4 isn't his batting position since it requires maneuvering the ball to take singles and power hitting as and when required. IMO, Rohit can be tried at No.4 since he has that big hitting ability and Rahane should be tried as an Opener for a series or two. If he fails as an opener, then selector might think about dropping him. It sounds very early, but the next world cup is in England. We need a technically correct batsman at the top since there probably will be assistance for seamers and we can't rely on Dhawan to give us a good start or just keep his wicket intact till 10-15 overs to see off the new ball. Same goes for Nohit. If Rahane does come good as opener, at least we will have one opener who can be there till 15-20 overs with a SR of 75-80 and others like Kohli & Co. can play around him.
Marut Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Rahane has a list A batting average of 35. His strike rate is not listed at cricinfo, but based on several match score cards, I could guess he has a S/R of 80odd in List A. Not exactly great stats, and he has not done well so far at the international level either. Rahane should play more List A cricket and then make a case for his inclusion in the India side. He is the type of batsman who can be tied down by good bowlers and he will be a liability while chasing targets. I think his performance against SA was a one off - he is a kind of batsman who makes 30 off 45 balls on average.
adi B Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 I won't drop rahane just now, will give him another go
Precambrian Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 No, has been given enough chances and not really turned up. I think it was a bad decision to have him in ODIs - not yet ready. But I think eventually he will come around - anyways the horse has bolted as far as this WC is concerned, but I somehow feel he can be counted on for the next world cup - to play a role like Dravid used to. It all depends on the next two years how he goes.
game_changerr Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 No....that sa knock was just a fluke....odi/loi is not his cup of tea

His main issues were the same, inability to turn the strike and finding the fielders with precision. But then in 1999,we toured NZ and something snapped in him. Was never the same ODI player since then. Although it took still some time before that S/R rose above 70 (2005).
Bleed-Blue Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 If You Want Batmen Like Rahane In Team I Think He Has To Open Or We Might Aswell Have Pujara In Place Of Him Who Has An Average 50 + In Domestic Odis And Can Rotate The Strike Much Better Can play At SR Of 80+ And Feel He Will Be Much More Consistent in Odis.

Also during his time there was not much demand of scoring at high rate like today. I would compare Rahane with Laxman who could hit the ball only through conventional areas. So if you block those areas you can keep him at one end. I am not sure how Rahane is going to improve. He might eventually. But he has to add more strokes to get there.
jf1gp_1 Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 Not just Rahane, we need to look at almost every batsman and his batting position. Opening pair should be revisited, should kohli come at 4 like he does in test, what role will rahane and jaddu have in the team and we have to find a big finisher like yuvi.

Pujara, knee problem.Let Pujara do well in England and Australia in tests.

The Diesel man Rohit played 80 ODIs in middle order, could not rotate strike or make big scores and hence was pushed to opening, where he still could not rotate strike. But Dhoni want to keep him because he doesn't want to bring back Sehwag and Diesel man is youngsta beauty (well not anymore). The only place for Diesel man after this should be Indian domestic cricket to learn to rotate strike.
Vicky95 Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 No, other promising batsmen deserve chances ahead of him. He should be on the selector's radar though.
Sidhoni Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 Not even a question about it. He is going to be a strong pillar in that middle order in the years to come.
amiret Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 NO . He played a good innings vs SA . But Murali Vijay deserves a chance instead of Rahane.
renjith Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 time to try out kedhar yadav or karun nair in that position.
peterparker Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 I will say now YES. He has the game. He is willing to stand their. He has a sound technique, he just struggles with concentration.
