G_B_ Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 ^ Is it the trend of the day that a lot of nationalistic parties are winning the mandate than left- liberal parties? SNP are a left wing nationalistic party... i would not classify them as right wing. They are littered with asian and black members. Its a bit like the even more left wing trinamool (who want independence for west bengal) trumping the CPM. But the general right wing vote has increased in England and Wales. I dont have the officialy stats but in places in London hindus and sikhs have voted for the conservatives or the centre right party.
G_B_ Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 As far as India goes, there is a defo trend in the conservative party to target hindu and sikh votes in London. Especially north west and west London. Places like Harrow East have voted back conservatives. Its a blue print similar to that of Stephan Harper in Canada. So expect David Cameron to make an major attempt to improve relations with India. While Muslims have never voted for the Conservatives, Hindus and Sikhs are slowly becoming 50-50 left wing and right wing. Ie becoming politically neutral. I do believe Modi is due to tour the UK in June /July 2015. If that does happen expect Cameron to roll out the red carpet (or blue carpet)
BeautifulGame Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 @GB Results are out or just pre poll/ exit poll predictions ?
G_B_ Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 they are currently counting. Its its a mixture of leads + declared results. Full set of results out in 7 hours. What happens is labour has its strongholds in the cities. While conservatives have their strongholds in rural areas. So the results for labour come in much quicker than the conservatives. The counting in the UK happens after polls close after 10pm and results continue to flood in through the night with a clear trend emerging at about 4/5am
Sachin=GOD Posted May 8, 2015 Author Posted May 8, 2015 Very strong showing by Tories. Unexpected. As for Labor - irrespective of what exit polls said, they were never going to win on their own with a leader like Ed Miliband. His brother might have been a better choice. And with SNP's performance, Britain will have to give more and more concessions to Scotland and maybe another referendum might also happen :hmmm: BTW Cameron has promised a referendum on Britain's membership of EU in 2017 - that would be interesting.

On average they the SNP have got about 42-43% of the popular vote. That works well in a first past the post system. But not in a system which is first to 50% in a two horse race.The remaining 56-57% are unionists. The price of oil is also key. At about $70 a lot of people are wary of Scotland's economic prospects. SNP are going to become a bit like the AIADMK. Expected to be king maker with power and leverage. Nothing to show for it....
G_B_ Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 also like to say the UK tends to vote in consistent waves From 1979 to 1997 conservative 1997 to 2010 labour now 2010-2020 at-least conservative. So i guess labour have to bide their time. More than the conservatives the SNP are eating away at historic labour strongholds. A lot of questions were asked of Conservatives in the 2001 2005 elections saying they are unelectable etc. They need another Blair....

You dont think the Scots will pressure political parties, especially SNP, for a referendum?
G_B_ Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 You dont think the Scots will pressure political parties' date=' especially SNP, for a referendum?[/quote'] not when they have had a referendum in 2014. You cant keep on having independence votes. Its a once in a generation thing. No way is cameron going to grant them one either. He gave them the chance , they failed. They will have to wait for a while. and keep in mind they lost the referendum by 45-55% margin. so its not even close. maybe another one can be held in the next 15-20 years. But certainly not 5.
BeautifulGame Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 So much for exit polls Yesterday I was reading in Guardian were projecting 46-45 % in favour of Labour yesterday. And most were going for the closest elections in decades
G_B_ Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 So much for exit polls Yesterday I was reading in Guardian were projecting 46-45 % in favour of Labour yesterday. And most were going for the closest elections in decades UK political establishment are used to predicting two party votes.Labour and Conservatives with some lib dem seats thrown in. It will take time for them adjust how they calculate stuff. If anything they need to learn from indian pollsters. Its much much harder in India.
Khalpat Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 SNP are a left wing nationalistic party... i would not classify them as right wing. They are littered with asian and black members. Its a bit like the even more left wing trinamool (who want independence for west bengal) trumping the CPM. Its interesting that you used Trinamool as example, I want to know more about SNP. The reason is I was watching ndtv hindi today and Srinivasan Jain was reporting from London, while explaining about SNP, he said this party is similar to ShivSena in India. I was shocked to hear because he used the term that like Shivsena, SNP is regional party with seperatist ideology. It sure was slip of tongue but in very bad taste.

Another thing - it was SNP which pushed most strongly for the Scottish referendum last year so obviously they would have taken into consideration the vote share etc so now after winning 56 out of 59 I would think that they would apply more pressure for another referendum or would at least ask for major concessions.
Sachin=GOD Posted May 8, 2015 Author Posted May 8, 2015 Nick Clegg resigns as Lib Dems leader - seems quite bitter after the spectacular fall in fortunes for the party.
Sachin=GOD Posted May 8, 2015 Author Posted May 8, 2015 Ed Miliband will also probably resign as Labor Leader. Just wasn't the right choice as leader and never looked like he could connect with people.
Sachin=GOD Posted May 8, 2015 Author Posted May 8, 2015 UKIP: 12.6% of the vote, 1 seat SNP: 4.8% of the vote, 50 seats. SNP: 1.4 million votes = 56 seats UKIP: 3.8 million votes = 1 seat http://t.co/ysAG0YvwpW

It sure was slip of tongue but in very bad taste.[/quote'] it is the Trinamool. the same violent tendencies. same left wing policies. Only difference is independence. The sena believes in Marathi Hindutva. While they have toned that down to include those who believe in the marathi ideals and speak the language their core message is sort of the same. The SNP version of who is scottish is basically somebody who is believes in the scottish ideals. They want to quit the uk long term and join the european union. They believe in the welfare state. Srinivasan jain does not know what he is talking about.

Cameron is just not going to grant them anything no matter how much pressure they put on him. The conservatives have retained 1 seat they have in Scotland and Conservatives have a majority outright. The power to grant them a referendum rests only with david cameron. (assuming he is the leader of the conservatives) The only referendum will be if UK stays or in or out of the European Union. That should be in May 2017. The entire referendum is designed to keep UKIP from eating into conservative base. But Scotland is a shut case. Cameron will be dumb to ever grant SNP another chance this 5 year term.
