An Australian fan on Cricinfo on the discussion on whether Sehwag was a right choice.... ( says a lot about why we are perfectly right in having Sehwag).

As an Australian, I was quite happy to see Sehwag excluded. Dravid, Laxman, Tendulkar and Ganguly are class batsman and can punish the Australian bowling but from the sidelines one feels that the Aussies in the past have always had them under control. Sachin or Rahul might get a big hundred, but you can usually rely on nabbing the others for under 50. Sehwag can take the game away from you in a day. If he gets a start and flogs the ball to all parts, the pressure is relieved on the other guys and they can stroll their way to big scores. Laxman is a master at it. He can look like he's just plodding along while Sehwag is blasting away; next thing it's Tea and Laxman's 80 or 90 also. I feel sorry for any young cricketer that misses out, especially if his form is good, but I would rather play against a relatively inexperienced player than have Sehwag in the side. He is a threat and even if he fails in the first test, there's three more to play. Worth a punt, I think. Cheers Posted by Warnesie on December 13 2007, 01:49 AM GMT

Honestly, I was expecting this, says Sehwag TNN / Indranil Basu NEW DELHI, December 12: The Indian cricket fraternity was taken by surprise when, on Wednesday, the national selection committee named Virender Sehwag in the 16-member Indian Test squad for the Australian tour. But one person, who was not surprised was Sehwag himself. "To tell you honestly, I was expecting a call from the selectors. Initially, I was not a part of the probables but my sixth sense said something else. And now that I’m in the team, I want to thank the selectors and my skipper (Anil Kumble) for reposing hope in my ability to play for the country," Sehwag told TOI on Wednesday. "Also, I’ve to concentrate on my batting and make sure that I don’t lose my wicket cheaply. In recent days, I’ve not been getting big runs in domestic cricket but I’m batting well. I just need some luck to click in the middle and play some long innings," Sehwag opined. How did he feel when the selectors left him out of the 24-member probables list last week? "I was not scoring. That is why I was not in the list. I also knew that my day would come if I’m honest with my work on the field. This is the time to leave behind all bad memories and get on with the Australian series. It’s very important for my career." Sehwag added: "Under new skipper Kumble, our team is in great form and most of our batsmen have really stood out in the recently concluded Pakistan series. Now, we’re going to carry the momentum to the next series and this time, we have a very good chance to make an impact in Australia." "In the last Australian tour, I had some good scores. This time too, I’m hopeful of making full use of the opportunity," he added. How will he prepare for the series? "Mentally, I’m ready. I am quite positive. I plan to practice in Delhi with synthetic balls on cement pitches," Sehwag revealed. http://cricket.indiatimes.com/articleshow/2618195.cms

Picking Sehwag is a bold move TNN / Shashank Shekhar NEW DELHI, December 12: Former Australian captain Ian Chappell recently said that Indian selectors had committed a huge mistake by omitting Virender Sehwag from the probables list for the Test series in Australia. According to Chappell, the Australians still feared Sehwag because of his exploits on the last Indian tour to Down Under, in 2003-04. The Delhi batsman’s omission among the probables had, in fact, also riled a sizeable number of experts and fans. On Wednesday, the 'mistake' was rectified when, in a bold move, the five wise men, with some prodding from skipper Anil Kumble, drafted Sehwag into the squad which will fly to Australia in a few days. The dramatic decision to bring back the prodigal son from international wilderness - because of Gautam Gambhir’s injury, the BCCI informed - may seem a bit unfair on Aakash Chopra who was one of the three specialist openers in the probables’ list. But it is a popular, and even sound, selection. And while it would have warmed the hearts of his legion of fans, it will not go down too well with the Aussies. Brett Lee and Co. would not have forgotten his blazing 195 on 2003 Boxing Day in the Melbourne Test when the ‘Delhi Dasher’ made them look distinctly club class. It seems unlikely, though, that Sehwag will get a look-in in the playing eleven, at least in the first two Tests of the four-Test series. Sehwag, while adding some star value of his own to a glittering batting line-up, will have to wait in the wings. With six batsmen - Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Sourav Ganguly and Wasim Jaffer - picking themselves in the 11 based on class, record and form, and with MS Dhoni coming at No.7, there is no place for a seventh batter. Sehwag can come into the picture only if a batsman suffers a drastic loss of form or an injury. Or, if the team management decides to shock and awe the Australians by unleashing him as an unforeseen weapon. However, the fact remains that the selectors have given Sehwag a new lease of life by just putting him on the plane to Australia. They have taken a risk because they have gone against form - Sehwag has not been able to decisively come out of the damaging spell of flippant cricket he fell into last year. His showing in the ongoing Ranji Trophy in which he has been captaining Delhi has not really set things on fire. He, though, still averages almost 50 in Tests for his 4,155 runs and hit 464 at 58 per innings in the last Aussie trip. While he takes heart from these numbers, it is upto him now to make good of the opportunity, if he gets one in Australia, that is. He owes it to himself, his god-gifted talent, his fans and to the game itself, because Virender Sehwag in full steam is one of the most exhilarating sights in cricket. http://cricket.indiatimes.com/Picking_Sehwag_is_a_bold_move/articleshow/2618145.cms

Finey' date=' why after Veeru all the time? now he's selected..and if he gets an opportunity to bat, lets all  that he comes good.. he's too precious to be left in the wilderness for ever!l[/quote'] Danra, My main issue is that Selectors need to reward performance, and drop for non performing. Some leeway for "stars" is ok. Acceptable. But some leeway, not total leeway. In Sehwag's case he has not done anything worthwhile to make a comeback, so that means we are picking based on "star" reputation, not on performance. As I said before, now that he is picked once the MATCH STARTS and he is in 11, I will  he does well. However if he fails, the brick bats will be thrown at him. He has been given a free ticket and magic of selection! He better capitalize on it, and I'll be HAPPY if he does, but HE MUST - no excuses!

Please check...www.cricinfo.com for confirming Virender Sehwag HAS DELIVERED for boxing day test.....and www.indiancricketfans.com....for all the analysis....after 2nd day of boxing day test
Sure, I'll be watching (i hope). I will be happy if he scores, since it helps the team total (if he gets into the 11, i think YS will be ahead of him in 11). As I said - you can hit jackpot with lottery. And BCCI is aiming for that. This is more "pick and pray  " than merit based methodical picking of a squad. Wishing BCCI and sehwag supporters of ICF that for Team India's sake you do hit JACKPOT! with VS

It's always good to fall back upon experience in test cricket. If it were for ODIs India could have done with few youngsters. Sehwag in test cricket to Aussie tour is a fantastic choice. He's one of the few batsmen that is fantastic on anything short outside the off stump. Fair enough he struggles a bit when bowled on the body but if he can play to half of his ability he'll put the likes of Lee' date=' Tait and the rest under scanner. The Aussies would rather not see Sehwag opening. I'm glad Sehwag made it to the team.[/quote'] Totally agree with you, but I do get a feeling that a failure in Aus would mean the end of road for Sehwag.:hatsoff:

Even if you play with a plastic ball on a feather bed you can't do anything until you move your feet and play close to the body

He's just doing it to get his hand-eye coordination going on "fast bouncy" tracks :D You can forget about feet movement and playing close to the body from Sehwag.. He was never like that :P
