Bumper
Gobarskar talking about aggression:hysterical: For the record Gavaskar was one of the most defensive captains we've ever had. Mr. Gobarskar must check his own record as captain & see the no. of draws he led the team to, before whining about Kumble's captaincy. If that doesnt help, he must repeatedly watch the tapes of his world cup feats. Here is a man who wondered, why the world was fretting about his ultra aggressive effort of 36 off 60 overs, in which he rattled all the opponent bowlers. Where was your aggression, then, Mr. Gobarskar ? Forget aggression. How about showing a bit of common sense as the country's lead cricket expert and ICC representative. The guy cries hoarse about umpiring mistakes & what not & then discards technology as a solution to aid the umps. As the chair of our coach selection commitee, the man picks Gary Kirsten, based on his 30 min presentation as our head coach. Even Zimbabwe cricket union interviewed Kirsten for a week, before turning him down. Kumble knows far more about aggressive captaincy than Gobarskar would ever care to know. Link to comment
Ram
Isnt it amazing, that KR's first reply to the OP kinda set the tone to the way this thread was going. Almost every respondent has had a go at Gavaskar since and no one ( except Tics) has debated about the relative merits and demerits of the Kumble decision. Link to comment
beetle
Kumble should remind him about his 36 N O and tell him to shut up. Kumble has nothing to lose now. Link to comment
beetle
If this had come from someone else or had been less hypocritical...people would have responded that way sriram...but the sheer hypocrisy of this article forced most of us to this....:dontknow: Link to comment

talksport
Gavaskar critisizing Kumbles defensive declaration....and lack of preceived aggressiveness is not a problem....It doesnt matter whether he is aggressive or scored 36.... But to look for a consipracy theory in Karthicks 50 is inexcusable.... Probably Team wants to encourage Karthik when he is not in form...Thats what your Captain and Team Mates are for.... coffee_rules
Why should Gavaskar lose the right to be a arm-chair critic only because he made 36 in 60 overs? If he was defensive in playing cricket, does he lose the right to accuse others about not being aggressive. People are suppised to have learnt from his mistakes and not repeat them as he says. No need to be so cross at him for these comments. Link to comment
Bumper
Does anyone discuss what Kirti Azad or Atul Wassan or Aasish Kapoor said ? Gavaskar is not yet another cricket journo. He is a national icon. His words get a lot of press, he assumes several important positions both at the country, ICC level. He better not sound so blatantly hypocritical. Else, he will be ridiculed. Its pointless comparing Gavaskar with an arm chair critic, as if he is just that, we wont have a thread discussing his comments. Link to comment
Mr. Wicket
Kumble's decision was poorly timed. But I don't think his sole purpose in the delayed declaration was to give Karthik a 50. Rather, that may have just been a convenient point to end the innings. Many captains do that. Wait in the session, then when a batsmen crosses a serious landmark, close the innings and send the other team in. I think Gavaskar's suggestion that Karthik's 50 was of significance is inappropriate and unjustified, and there are far better arguments to make against the timing of Kumble's declaration.
