After having seen the original, it made me realize that it was a far superior work, although "Black" still remains quite a watchable copy.

They took verbal permission for Star Wars. George lucas personally asked for permission before taking those character inspirations... The one that Kurosawa got angry was against Leone who copied yojimbo from "fistful of dollars" without any permission. but then again it is not a hollywood movie but an italian spaghetti western... so..

One would have hoped that, even if the plot was copied (which is fairly simple and sentimental), at least the character designs would have been significantly altered.. but no... too lazy for such thngs, they are. ET itself reminds me a bit of Yoda in some aspects.

I agree with your synopsis of Nakadai and Mifune. And yes, there are certain roles for whom they are best suited and one cannot indeed pass blanket judgements. I guess I should have asked if you have a sentimental/gut preference for either of them. For my part, I'd rather watch Mifune-Kurosawa movies than the collaborations with nakadai, although one of my fav Kurosawa movies is "Ran". Samurai Rebellion was excellent, but I found it a bit overly serious and strained at times. Of Kobayashi's works, I prefer Harakiri. I didn't know that part about "The Bad Sleep Well" - thanks for info.

For samurai oriented movies, it's Mifune for me, and I also rate him very highly even in near-contemporary roles that call for lots of theatricality - "Rickshaw Man" is a good example. I like nakadai, but I haven't seen enough of him. There are some actors who played in a nice mix of period and contemporary roles who I do like, such as Masayuki Mori, Takashi Shimura, etc. Hard to pick one for me; even in Jap actresses, plenty of capable names there. Do you have any favs?

If you had read my post on Ek Villian, may be it would have saved you from the trouble of making such a list :hysterical: As for Sholay, as I said, it was made in a different time :P Coming back to the present, as I said - below is unacceptable as a benchmark for "great"
