England ex.cricketers' comments should not be taken seriously.They just get into euphoria after winning Test series.And this is Ashes.They should have been over the moon.Boycott said that no one should show sympathy towards Arrogant Aussies and Clarke.They were overconfident and unprepared.Michael Vaughan said this England team is unbeatable In tests now.;)

I still have Smith over Root based on that generally it is harder to get Smith out than Root but I love watching both. Smith has a better eye, Root has a better looking technique. Williamson is okay but I don't put him with those two just yet.

Rahane's innings at Lord's was masterclass. Even at mcg he was better than Kohli.In Bangladesh when kohli and Saha couldn't read Googly and Rohit failed,he just scored easy 98 with almost 100 SR.But many of us don't like to remember it as it was in Asia against Bangladesh. Only thing I don't like about Rahane is that he plays too many shorts after completing century.He did that in Australia and NZ.

sensible-indian Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 Why is Rahane so underrated by even Indians? The only thing left for him to prove is playing spin on rank turners. Leaving stats aside, the most complete batsman in modern times I have seen is Kane Williamson and if Rahane can do it against spin, he will be one too though (though Kane looks more complete with a much tighter technique). I have suspicions over Smith's ability to sustain quality over the long term. He may not be an FTB but he sure has major major issues with technique. He is doing great but I can't say with certainty he would have succeeded in the 90s while I can the same for Kane and Rahane (yet to judge him against quality spin).

Root averages 43 away from home. 27 in Aus (4 games) 93 in India (1 game - that Nagpur patta but his innings was crucial clutch knock) 17 in NZ (3 games) 89.5 in WI (3 games) Rahane averages 48.5 outside Asia and 50 away from home 57 in Aus (4 games) 33 in Eng (5 games) 54 in NZ (2 games) 69.66 in SA (2 games) 98 in Bangladesh (1 game - patta) Yet to play and bash WI. Both Root and Rahane play clutch knocks but Rahane has been doing it in every place.

Root Rahane are more in Sachin mode maybe? Generally balanced performances. Neither troughs nor peaks but balanced. I mean they are not in the same league as Sachin or Lara, but I kind of feel this is an apt comparirion. And as a test batsman, I agree Rahane's better than Kohli. He doesn't hog the limelight but he is. Infact he and not Kohli makes the top 4 young batters currently(Root/Williamson/Smith being the other 3).

However Root has to do a lot overseas before he can be called a player with balanced performance. But he does have the potential component.
