Sachin=GOD Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 I always thought Kaif was hard done by the selectors. He played a decent knock in Tests IIRC against SA but never got another chance as he didn't do too well in odis I also think do. He definitely deserved some more chances. But I don't think he's good for Tests now.
CG Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Rohit will be better than kohli or any other youngsters in test.Allthough average of 30 is not hard to overtake.
carnish Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Would you say the same thing about Pujara if say he's given a chance in T20s & odis and doesn't succeed? Everyone can see that players like Pujara and Rahane are more suited to Tests and they have to be given a chance to succeed in their preferred format. Same with Rohit. Just because he has all the shots in the book we mistake him to be the ideal odi player. He can very well turn out to be so but to me his best format is Tests and that's where he should be given an opportunity to sink or swim. I wont say the same thing if they are given a chance but will say so if they are given A Chances for 5 years and still fail. A good test player obviously has the abilities to grind out in various situatons, I wont mind if rohit fails to hit the big shots and accelerate the scoring but failing to read simple deliveries and playing rash shots in the middle of innings in an ODI without RR pressure makes me believe that Rohit doesnot have the attitude or will required to succeed and hence will always be a liability unless we get roads. Will say the same for Pujara and Rahane if they fail for more than 80 ODIs without a doubt .. hell 80 .. will say so if they fail for 30 ODIs.. thats enough.

You can't judge a Test player or his Test credentials based on his performances in shorter formats. We made the same mistake with Yuvraj & Raina and it seems we haven't learnt much from the mistakes.

We made the same mistake with Yuvraj & Raina and it seems we haven't learnt much from the mistakes. What mistake we made with YUVI and Raina was thinking if they can play ODIs and T20s well they can play tests well ... however I wont say it was a mistake as both UV and Raina have the temperament to play tests but have to work on their techniques .. selectors will give you a chance on your potential offcourse then its the players job to work on his game and improve to permanently cement his place in the team. The same rule that ICFers in love with phaaasssttt bowling apply when they call to replace VK with bowlers having pace even though those bowlers havent done anything substantial. This is where potential comes in play. Talent is always there but its what you do with talent. Rohit has a lazy attitude towards his game. The guy who can stick out in difficult batting circumstances in tests can surely score at a S/R of 75+ in ODIs. But Rohit fails to even get a start. Too many loose strokes I have seen from him.. I guess you would have seen too. This is what bothers me. Do you mean to say that he will change his attitude when he plays test cricket and play sensibly at start of innings.. how can you be so sure. Didn't he play for India A tests.. What did he do apart from that 90 odd in that 1st test.. If I am not wrong he didnt even cross 50 in any other innings. Then again you will argue that maybe the pitches were difficult but then thats what Test Cricket will throw at you.. you cannot always give that excuse esp. playing for India. I hope he proves me wrong smashing centuries and doubles in whatever he plays cause that would be good for India. However I would not recommend giving him more than one more series in tests to prove his mettle. If he does well good enough, else he should be asked to play Ranji until he works on that attitude of his.
bajrang Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 He is 3rd class! fixed jokes apart rohit has the average (32)similar to kaif and kambli with pretty similar strike rate in the 70s, he is now just 20 matches or so away from overtaking one of them, if those guys were not good enough to play then how can anyone justify rohit on talent alone?

Probably calling it mistake is not the right word as Yuvi & Raina deserved a shot to see whether they can replicate their shorter format form in Tests. Sadly we found out that's not the case so the lesson learnt from that exercise is that you can't treat performances in one format as a basis for selection in another. And this is exactly what you are proposing with Rohit. Anybody who has seen Rohit bat can see he has all the shots in the book but he has an inability to rotate the strike. He's like Laxman in that respect, i.e. he will play out 5 deliveries without scoring a run andthen hit a boundary off the 6th. This doesn't work n shorter formats as the pressure piles on you with every maiden delivery and secondly you have spread fields in odis which don't guarantee you a boundary even when you hit a great shot. Rohit averages 60 in FC cricket and he wouldn't face the same pressure of scoring off every delivery in Tests where he can afford to settle down. I say he deserves a go in the Tests and to not give him a chance on the basis of his performances n odis would be proving that we didn't learn anything for Yuvi/Raina Test episode.

I pretty much agree here. The only problem I find is that he's not "patient". This can be said about a lot of new Indian batsmen btw, barring Raina I guess.

Let him have a few Tests before deciding whether he's good enough for Tests.

Ultimate_Game Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 Yes - it was unfortunate he missed out against South Africa in 2010 after a freak injury during match practice. And you can't hold that injury against him. It was for our selectors to at least have an extra batsman in the squad rather than playing Saha as a specialist batsman  I don't think Srikkanth ever amitted his mistake. If anyone had dropped a ball similarly in another profession, it would have cost the person his job.
GautiMaan Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 So do u think he still deserves to be in the ODI team?

Guess you did not read my whole post .. I didnot propose to leave him out based on these performances in ODIs .. I have clearly written we should try him atleast in one series ..New Zealand series though doesnot count as its not a good bowling lineup and its just two tests .. but then the England series should be where his line should be drawn. If he scores well and good for India, if not we should forget him for atleast two years.. he must be asked to play two seasons of Ranji and maybe some county cricket. Plus about your comment on pressure in ODIs because he doesnot get to rotate the strike I agree but its not something I ever denied. I was commenting on his attitude because he failed in the unofficial tests in Windies too .. thats where my cause of concern is .. read my previous comment you will find that was my reasoning for not believing in him. I accept I have always liked Kohli better than Rohit since 2009 even if Rohit was the better talent since only talent doesnot take you through and we already have a wasted talent in Kambli for the same reasons. Rohit to me seems to be going down the same line unless he does something pretty quickly about it. And no one big knock wont help. Needs to be consistent
skindia Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 Sachin got first century in odi after 75 matches....give him also some time:winky:
Ultimate_Game Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 Sachin got first century in odi after 75 matches....give him also some time:winky: Yup, 75 games and 5 years. We should also look at the likes of Amla who didn't look that good when he broke in the team and look him now! You can't ask for a player's head when the player hasn't even been given a fair chance. Just because Rohit has been on the team's fringes for the 5 years doesn't mean he has been getting opportunities for the last 5 years. The guy hasn't even been given one Test so far and that says it all about India's "Transition Plan"
bajrang Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 rohit and kohli both have bated at number 4 position roughly the same number of matches (24-25), one is averaging 33 other is averaging 66. one dude has scored 6 centuries around the globe other has 2 centuries on the same ground in Zimbabwe. atleast compare rohit to some of his contemporaries. even pakis dont start comparing every other bowler to wasim waqar without seeing performance first. heck even kohli who has record miles better then sachin in ODI at same number of matches (or anybody else) should not be compared to him. sachin was lot younger then these two guys when he started playing. age is also a factor. but if you must then let me tell you, both kohli and sachin scored centuary in odi at the age of 21. and so did ponting and inzi who are number 2 & 3 after sachin at leading run scorer in ODI. see any pattern? rohit doesnt go with sachin in ODI.
