Injured Malinga, Mathews unlikely for India T20s. Perfect time to try youngsters

Sri Lanka are likely to send a depleted squad to India next month to play the scheduled T20 series, given a number of injuries to key players. Among them are fast bowler and T20 captainLasith Malinga, allrounder Angelo Mathews, spinner Rangana Herath and fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep.

India and Sri Lanka are set to play three T20s from February 9 to 14, prior to the Asia Cup thatbegins on February 24.

Malinga is still recovering from a knee injury that kept him out of the tour to New Zealand. It is learnt that he will require another fortnight to regain full fitness. Test and ODI captain Mathews is nursing a groin strain that largely prevented him from bowling in New Zealand. His injury is less severe than Malinga's, though, and Sri Lanka Cricket are hoping he will be available for the Asia Cup at the end of the month. Malinga's recovery time has already been delayed, after it was initially hoped he would be able to play some part during the limited-overs series in New Zealand.

Pradeep and Herath picked up injuries during the Premier T20 Tournament, a domestic competition, while playing for their respective clubs. Pradeep is being treated for a hamstring injury and Herath for a pulled side muscle.

Sri Lanka Cricket sources revealed that all four are unlikely to figure in the squad for India, and their places are likely to be filled by young players who have performed well in the recently concluded Premier T20. Dinesh Chandimal, who led Sri Lanka in the two T20 internationals in New Zealand, will most probably continue as captain.

A provisional squad of 30 will be picked before February 1 for the World T20, which will be held in India in March. The performances of players in the ongoing Super T20 Provincial Tournamentwill be taken into consideration when picking the team for the World T20. It is learnt that the squad that is picked for the Asia Cup in Bangladesh - a T20 tournament in its new version - will virtually be the same one as that which will defend Sri Lanka's World T20 title.

No Malinga, herath, Mathews , Pradeep. I think its the perfect series to try a few new players and find some answer to our t20 key concerns. After This is Asia cup a bigger tournament to risk newcomer. But ppl who do well can get more opp in Asia cup

Rest- Rohit, kohli, Ashwin, jadeja or even raina

Try- Unmukt, iyer, uthappa, pandey,Irfan , nathu, Kuldeep yadav, deepak hooda, Gurkeerat mann

People Needing match time- yuvraj and bhajji

1. Rest guys like Rohit, kohli, Ashwin, Jadeja. Also cud rest Raina if he gets more runs in this series. Next 2 T20s shud b last for dhawan and if he doesnt do well drop him. And if Kohli and Rohit plays that series be rest assured other wnt get much of chance to do anything.

2. Players like Yuvraj singh , harbhajan needs Match. They both are confidence player. So they need something under their belt. Hardik pandya also shud be given a game or two to bat up get some runs

3. Openers- We can try Pandey, Iyer, Unmukt , Uthappa among these. But they need to given those 3 matches. An opener who cud play fearless cricket and give us a gr8 start can b really helpful and i dont expect much from them so early . If they do Wat better than that. Dhawan neither gives u fats start nor he bats through.

4. Find extra pacer- Right now two fixed spots are Nehra and bumrah. Well Nehra can get injured while yawing as well. And we still do need 3 seamers on squad. Shami doesnt look like to b getting fit. I always thought of bhuvi as very gud t20 bowler but he is completely low on confidence. Umesh n Aaron lacks srs control so complete no no for me for them in t20. We cud try Nathu singh and sran. Nathu has a gud yorker and again a surprise bowler. N about lack of exp. Well the best tht most indian bowlers bowls is wen they dnt have exp.

5. All rounder- Another all rounder cud add gr8 depth to this squad and give dhoni more options. For eg. If we add irfan pathan and make kohli open and send raina or dhoni to 3. We cud have long long batting. That can also give us option of adding another spinner may b like bhajji or kuldeep and bhajji can srsly tonk the ball and is quite economical n has done well in last few  yrs in Ipl . OR we cud add some one like Deepak hooda or Gurkeerat mann both can bat well in lower order and and give u useful over and on turning pitches part timer do become handy. Or even Negi even though his bowling is quite bad.

6. Try Kuldeep yadav if his bowling works there cud be some mystery to our attack . Left arm chinamen is something u dnt play reg. Specially teams like Pak, Sa, Eng . He cud really be a interesting and a wkt taking option

Kuldeep Yadav, Hooda, Mayank and Iyer can be tried.

Among pacers Nathu has lot of potential but is too raw at the moment. He needs to play a few seasons first. No need to destroy his confidence by playing T20. Same case with Sran. Aaron can be tried. He has improved his accuracy. He has hardly got a chance to play either in ODI or T20 after his comeback from injury.

Thats the beauty with fast bowlin u can try a raw pacer not batsman or spinner . they get better with time

In india all pacer are at their wen they are new.

The last time we saw aaron playing Int cricket he leaked runs

N wat impressed me about Nathu singh was his yorkers and understanding of situations. When to swing the and when to bowl fast.

Sran also bowled well . What wen against him was his stamina that he lost by third match. In t20 u hve to bowl four over so that no problem. N his height n slower ball wud add dimension. Yadav n aaron are gud for test but at t20 level to predictable

Agree with you on Yadav. Aaron was much more accurate in the test matches he played. He has shown a lot of improvement. Like I said Aaron has not got a lot of opportunities in T20's. He is the quickest bowler we have. No harm in trying him in a useless bilateral.

Actually Shreyas Iyer,Mayank Agarwal,Manish Pandey, Kedhar Jadhav, Ankush Bains, Sanju Samson, Kuldeep Yadav, Deepak Hooda,Pawan Negi,Chahal,Nathu Singh,Shardul Thakur, Aniket Chaudhary should get a chance to show their talent.

India shouldn't rest anyone imo. The whole point of getting so many T20's together was for the team to gel together. We hardly play T20 as a unit. Maybe rotate the regulars like Kohli/Rohit/Ashwin/Jadeja to keep them fresh.

Iyer/Agarwal need to be tried in place of Dhawan. Dhawan in T20's hasn't really provided the starts team requires.

Apart from these 3, none of the others merit a try-out so close to WT20.

Especially with Dhoni being a confirmed fixture - it rules out Jadhav/Bains or Samson & Ashwin-Mishra-Jadeja proving to be a lethal combo in T20s in Asian conditions - no point getting in Kuldeep/Hooda or Negi especially with Axar sitting out.
