How are other teams going to match Australia?

Recommended Posts

Aussie contributions welcome on this one. What makes them so good and can anyone challenge them? I did think that maybe South Africa could till they got thrashed by the Windies. People kept saying that once Warne and McGrath left the scene they'd drop a bit, but they keep finding new talent. I say if you can't beat 'em join 'em, in the sense that we have to see what it is that makes them so good and try and take a leaf out of their book.

There's no need to resort to insults.

Thing is it's easy for non-Australians to be bad losers and say things like 'Aussies have all the luck' or 'umpires screwed us', but it doesn't detract from the fact that the Australian team are a class apart from everyone else. The only weakness in their side I can see is that they don't seem to have a good front-line spinner.

Without NEUTRAL decisions they are still **** team against good teams.

Notwithstanding the 2005 Ashes when was the last time they lost a test series? Etc...

Its well documented how strong Aussies are. They cant be a bad team with that kinda record. Teams are already handicapped playing against them. You add umpiring gaffes to the equation, the match reduces to nonsense. If all umpiring decisions had gone our way, Aussies would have been bowled out for 250 & India would have likely finished the day 80/2. Instead we are looking down the barrel now, trying to save the test match. Granted they are more skilled. But umpiring errors make it impossible for teams to compete with them. Aussies are capable of punishing the opponents heavily, when let of, something other teams are not good at.

It would incredibly naive to think biased umpiring is what helped Aus to reach the position they are in right now. You can an win odd one-day series or a test match with some sort of assistance from the umpires, but to dominate world cricket like they have done for the last decade and a half, it requires a lot of talent, hardwork, excellent team ethics and equally brilliant management by the cricket board. India has the talent and to an extent the hard-work, but we lack a professional cricketing set-up and that is what is hurting us the most.

Also Australia has a VERY strong sporting culture, which we don't seem to have.

The watchword for excellence at the highest level is professionalism. Talent can take you only till certain levels, but beyond that, it is how professional you are, at each and every step you make, that will decide how you perform. It is no wonder that the hugely talented Asian teams perform exceedingly well in junior level cricket tournaments, where the work-ethics of all the teams are almost the same. It is between the ages 17 and 21 that i think the Australian system of professional coaching/training and preparation that help them produce such outstanding cricketers. Besides, have we ever heard of an Aus player who hits his team-mate with a bat ? or make a stupid statement against his team-mate or call his selectors a " bunch of jokers headed by a muppet" ? Such nonsense occurs only in Asia, coz our people way to importance to individuals rather than the team. Legends like Michael Beven, Steve Waugh were ruthlessly dropped from the team or given clear signals to quit, even though they were performing decently enough. We need a culture change in our system, a shift to a culture that stresses on accountability, consistent standards for all and gives huge importance to perfection. Till that happens, all we, as fans, can hope for is only to reminisce on the odd good performance of our teams. Continued success will alway elude us.

In spite of all that they were spared a series loss in the last tour again due to umpires. No matter how good they are, it's all tainted as long as cricket is not played fairly. OZs have always enjoyed having two extra players (3 yesterday). But of course this will seem like rhetoric to you, after all it's based on watching cricket for more than the last decade, and not only through my tainted eyes but with BW's stats as well.
