No HotSpot in DRS trial during India-England Tests

Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) 'trial basis' usage of the Decision Review System (DRS) during India's upcoming Test series at home against England, starting on November 9, will not include the HotSpot technology. BCCI's decision to try and embrace the technology came a little too close to the five-Test series for the sophisticated military grade camera equipment to be delivered on time.

According a report on Mumbai Mirror, BCCI had contacted the company around six weeks ago with an order, but the time required to supply new cameras could take nearly six months and require a lot of paper work with the government of Australia, where the cameras are built.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) rules regarding technology states that HawkEye and Ultra Edge components that aide Leg Before Wicket decisions and tight catches, are mandatory while using DRS. HotSpot is an additional feature that provides further evidence for a decision.

BCCI's reluctant embracing of DRS, even if only on a temporary basis, came after they had to be convinced about the improvement in its accuracy. The inclusion of UltraEdge in DRS, since late 2015, played a key role in convincing the Indian board management. In the absence of HotSpot, BCCI will rely on UltraEdge to determine involvement of bat in close catching and LBW decisions.

"Manual intervention to set the impact point has been controlled by the introduction of the 'UltraEdge', which has been approved by MIT and will help in determining the frame of impact. UltraEdge also ensures that post impact balls do not affect the predicted path or impact point and hence the accuracy has been improved," BCCI had stated in their release while accepting DRS for the Test series.

It remains to be seen if HotSpot is included for India's home Tests against Australia, starting in February next year.
