He is mighty good at getting the job done. Looking at his stance you get a feeling that bowler has a good chance of rattling his stumps, but his tremendous hand-eye coordination and superb footwork ensures he is always on top of the ball. Some of the shots he played yesterday, especially the inside-out shots were jaw-dropping.

I also feel Williamson has fallen behind a bit. But the other 3 (Root, Kohli and Smith) are going strong.

True.  What I  like about him is that Kohli works very hard to remove any weaknesses he has. Laxman was telling a story that, in his first test series, on a tour to the WI, he had major problems against bounce. This will help him counter swing bowling too. We saw him do that in the Asia Cup against Pakistan when most batters were at sea against the moving ball on  a green top. He seems to have learned from the England tour disaster and that is the way to go.

 

CBO...if you remember, we were discussing in another thread that Kohli had the highest run per innings in the last 3 years in test matches for us. Now, Kohli actually has the highest average too in tests in the last 3 years with 10 centuries in 31 tests.  Only 2 batsmen are averaging above 45 and only 3 are averaging above 40...and that is a cause for worry for our team.

No doubt he is a champion player and a fighter...he works hard on his game and is always looking to improve, has tremendous self-belief...but I am not yet fully convinced about his technique when playing short of a length and wide deliveries bowled from wide of the crease with an angle. He plays, pushing away from the body, and his bat nudges it through for a catch to the slip cordon. I am sure he wants to erase memories of the last Eng tour...eager to see how he handles this kind of line on the next tour to that country.

In this series there hasn't been any game in Eden so far...which 45* are you referring to?

Ya, I remember we were discussing why Kohli was India's best Test batsmen and why his wicket would be the most prized for Eng.

Thanks for sharing these stats...I agree this table doesn't paint a very rosy picture.
Though I believe Dhawan doesn't have the technique to survive on good wickets against quality bowling attacks, still he could have managed better numbers. Murali is a much better player, so really disappointed to see such low numbers for him. Will give some more time to Rahul, have high hopes from him. I am sure he will improve his numbers in due course of time. Ashwin has provided the much needed extra depth in batting...hope he continues the good work and also performs in ENG/SA/Aus/NZ. Jadeja can make himself more useful by working on his batting. It's a must if he wants to be a part of the Test team on foreign tours as well. Rahane is good; hopeful about Pujara, though he will have to be more consistent. Considering he bats at No. 3, those numbers certainly need to go up. Excited to see how young Jayant goes about his Test career...still early days for him, but he has shown plenty of promise.

He scored 45 against New Zealand at the Eden Gardens in October 2016.  It was a green track of variable bounce with deliveries either keeping low or bouncing high.  The match was a low scoring one with batting becoming more difficult in the last 3 innings. Before he got out to a ball which crept along the ground....it was a very confident innings in such a  situation, with him middling almost every ball.

Well, Vijay is around 40 avg. But yes, the rest are not pretty at all. Good to see Saha outscoring Rohit in terms of avgs.
