Cricket Australia stumped for answers over defeat

Highlights of what national chairman of selection Rod Marsh said in reaction to Australia's first test defeat against Lanka:

1. Marsh thought it was unbelievable that Aus lost by a margin of 106 runs.

2. The team had worked immeasurably hard in their preparation for the Lankan tour. Players had spent time on specially prepared pitches in Brisbane.

3. Four players were sent to India to acclimatise with the conditions before the team left for Sri Lanka, while the entire squad arrived a fortnight early to have enough time for preparations.

4. This is the best team they could have picked but Aus just does not play spin good enough.

5. Everything possible was done and nothing more could have been done. May be it's the fear of not winning in those conditions, we don't know. It's work in progress.

6. We also bought the services of Murali. Paid him top dollars, business class travel package to five star vacation in Australia. Took him into confidence and assured him he was better than Warne. Nah..he didn't say anything about Murali.  :p

At least the chairman of selectors was straightforward and called a spade a spade. When your team is not good enough to play spin, it's best to accept it and keep on working on the shortcomings.

I think they should chill, this can happen in a game as it happened to India last yr n our conditions are pretty similar. Opposition can play well and you cant learn to play spin in 1 mnth or so. Sometimes it is important to praise the opposition than be so self critical as their is time n series and they can come back. Aussies dont have an exp. side and it will happen. How will players learn unless they fail.
