Probably 10 years back, this art almost died but now every single country (including Afghanistan) are reviving this art and plenty of opportunities are given for this spinners? Crookbond
A wrist spinner can naturally have more variations. MechEng 1 Link to comment

MechEng
Wrist spin is a difficult art to practice. Needs a lot of patience and skill to impart revolutions to the ball using wrists, off spin on the other hand uses fingers to impart revolutions, making it relatively easier to practice than wrist spin. But the privilege that a wrist spinner has over off spin is that of having more variety. One reason why wrist spin is becoming popular now could be that the game has become too power based and less skill based (with better cricket equipment), as a result while players have improved their power hitting, range of shots and split second decision making, they've also ended up compromising over traditional skill based approach, a shortcoming which wrist spinners can exploit.
