Sony pays $ 1 billion for IPL rights January 14, 2008 17:52 IST The Indian cricket board's official Twenty20 League (IPL) has secured a 10-year rights contract worth more than $1 billion ahead of its launch in April, organisers said on Monday. The league, expected to feature many of the game's top players, is an effort to counter an unofficial Indian Twenty20 league whose inaugural edition was held late last year. The 44-day IPL starts on April. 18 and will feature eight franchises in its inaugural season, each squad containing 16 players. Teams will play home and away games leading up to a grand final. sandtest
BCCI continues making truckloads of money - IPL TV rights sold for 1Billion Dollars While we Indian fans all over the world are disturbed about how Bucknor robbed us in daylight and ICC gundas harrasing Indian team without any hesitation, BCCI babu, money hungry Lalit Modi is busy making as much money as possible. With mafia like control over India's major Cricket grounds and infrastructure, once IPL starts, I don't think it will leave any space for competition for private players like ICL. I say, declare all Cricket grounds and Infrastructure in India as public property and let other private players come in picture. Competition with BCCI mafia will be good for the future of Indian Cricket. msb1991
I hope the BCCI puts this money back into the development of cricket in India (no sarcastic "Not likely" comments needed). This TV deal alone would cover the contracts easily, it is good business by the BCCI to realise that with these TV deals, they could offer the overseas stars an unlimited amount of money. Wont happen automatically. They'll need to be forced into it - any thoughts how BCCI can be forced into putting the money back into dev?
eternalhope
Whatever be the amount of money BCCI makes, I am pretty sure they would not be able to match the organizational efficiency of the ICL. The one thing BCCI has been consistent in is, its inefficiency.
