sm332
agreed ... we can sacrifice someone elsewhere ... atleast that will mean the buggers have to play some good shots Link to comment
coffee_rules
If you have 3 slips and a gully, a close-in fielder, Mid wkt, fineleg, covers and mid-off and bowl an offstump line, you can get wkts more frequently. You will have to sacrifice a close catcher if 3rd man is used. That's why having a 3rd man makes it defensive. May be Kumble should attack from one end and contain at the other end. So, use 3rd man when containing, and not when attacking. Classic dilemma for captains in test cricket, akin to the Fineleg issue for ODIs. Use it when defensive, don;t use it when attacking.... ranj
Agreed. I also hope he gives Pathan the new ball, otherwise the minimal threat he might carry gets neutered right from the off. Link to comment
Cricketics
good to know that we have a good decent slip fielder now in the form of Virender Sehwag Link to comment

Donny
Pls. Pls. keep that thirdman fielder all the time..today 20% of runs came from this area. Please don't. This is one of the most tactically interesting but misunderstood aspects in Test cricket. It's a trade-off. For instance, the captain will purposely leave a gap (3rd./4th. slip) in the cordon with no 3rd. man. The idea is to tempt the batsmen to risk going through that gap, knowing he'll get a boundary if successful. It's a delicate gamble which quite often produces a wicket - a catch to 3rd. slip or gully/point. With a 3rd. man posted, the risk is hardly worth it for a single. Link to comment
PaiN_KiLLeR
Sadly he hasnt taken Kabira's advice serisously. Lots of runs have been scored in that area. Link to comment

fineleg
To Kumble: Please put a deep third man! Lets not give any free runs to Aus please! Link to comment
chunky_lafanga
I think Chapal said that third man is waste of fielder on bouncy pitches like Perth. Link to comment
Rajan
1.I would advice him to try bowling seam ups, if he does not get a breakthrough with his leg breaks , like he did in the bangalore test second innings- wicket to wicket like Stuart Clark.he is the most accurate of indian bowlers.he can get a few LBW's 2.he should use Sehwag for 2 -3 overs - he can compensate for Bhajji's absence. he gets good bounce and is a sharp turner of the ball( Dhoni says VS is the toughest bowler to keep).especially to Ponting and Clarke. 3. Sachin picked up key wickets with his leg spin bowling in both indian wins- adelaide last tour as well as kolkotta- turn around. let us hope for a win by TEA. Link to comment
fineleg
Kill Aus RR: Please stop the 4 every (other) over - it will be a gift to Aus Aus looking for Run Rate of 4 to be maintained. Its the way they'll play. For spinner (AK or VS): place one sweeper cover. (for offspin VS, depends on how he bowls) Kumble (over many years) has a tendency to bowl a rank long hop once in a while, it will be short and wide and will be easily driven. If 4 cannot be scored off it, it will frustrate Aus. For Faster bowlers, depending on their line, provide atleast one protection in terms of deep third man. Link to comment
