Golden Age of Allrounders?

An allrounder is one who is good at more than one skills: Batting and bowling preferably. Let's leave other possibilities.

Restricting it to mean one who can also make into team purely as a batsman or bowler distinctly is not reasonable.

Bits and pieces players are those who are below average in either or all of the skills.

For limited overs, the number of allrounders is so high now. Many bowlers have to work on their batting skills to win selection. I think it is fair to say its a great period of allrounders.

In tests its hard to get excited, because Kallis was such a legend as an allrounder. The current test allrounders are more wait and see projects IMO.

Kallis i think was so riddiculously overskilled tendu + zak is riddiculous. He is making geneuin allrounders look not good enough, only Botham and Sobers can possibly hang with him. Kapil and imran obviously bowling allrounders.

Absolutely, he was the best we have seen in terms of all round cricket, not those once in 10 match innings/spells, but consistent in terms of runs, and ever probing in his spells, always raising questions. Hell, his versatility won SA the only ICC event in 1998, still remember the way he plundered Murali with those huge sixes. Over the years he transformed from a power hitter to being a classical batsman, right up there with the likes of Sachin, Ponting, Lara, Sanga...

For Test cricket it has to be either Kallis or Sobers. For odi cricket it Kapil is the best prototype all rounder. He could bail his his team with his batting and also lead his team with bowling. He was exceptional in the field. He was an aggressive captain who led his weak team slaying Goliaths in WI.

Stokes is the closest allrounder but that is just in ODIs and T20s.Stokes bowling needs lot of improvement or his batting has to increase a notch.
