bunny Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 Did Steve Waugh got a farewell one day? The most respected player got dropped from One day Side....End of story. Dont understand why Ganguly,Dravid or Sachin should be given a farewell One Day ..... Well Steve Waugh wanted to play WC 2003. Dravid and Ganguly I'm sure are not eying WC 2011. They deserve a farewell series (if not that at least 2-3 farewell games). They are still not your worst batsmen in the squad. Some others hold that honour. And we don't have to follow Australia in everything, tbh.
prince40 Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 Damn watch India TV ' date=' it says that Dhoni wanted sachin out too :omg: ....they have a quote from Kirti azad saying that he wont be held responsible if seniors are in the team and India lose...according to that channel Dhoni doesnt want any seniors in the team , but the selectors only agreed on dravid's and dada's exclusion after a lengthy discussion , they are blaming dhoni entirely.[/quote'] if thats true then its pathetic that the selectors let this dhobi set the agenda on indian cricket, quite amusing for someone who is a known FTB and has done jack overseas yet hee hee
kumble_rocks Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 Why is it that Bengal crowd has a penchant to create tamasha (like bandh , strikes , parliament hearing etc) every time their hero gets dropped . Heck, we had two great legends from Karnataka ( Kumble and now Dravid) dropped at different times , and hardly any whiff of trouble from karnataka crowd ..
Guest HariSampath Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 KR.....thats a sign of Indian cricket fanaticism......unabble to accept reality and so burn stuff...pathetic.... God bless
kumble_rocks Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 KR.....thats a sign of Indian cricket fanaticism......unabble to accept reality and so burn stuff...pathetic.... God bless HS, you didn't see that in Karnataka after Dravid was dropped after the England series back then , you still don't see it now .... and even when Kumble was dropped , nothing happened to the scale of Bengals....

theguyinallblue Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 Greg King gave BCCI a fitness report in Ganguly..Ganguly has problem on his lower half...and he is not completely fit.. India TV :giggle: is showing a full fledge conspiracy theory...as if Ganguly was trapped in a "chakraview" :hysterical: and Dhoni plotted his downfall..
Gambit Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 King's observations sealed Ganguly's fate An observation by Indian team's trainer Gregory King coupled with captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni [Images] and his deputy Yuvraj Singh's [Images] opinions might have prompted the selectors to drop Sourav Ganguly [Images] from the one-day squad for the forthcoming cricket tri-series. King, who keeps a tab on the fitness of Indian team, apparently believed that Ganguly's lower half could give him trouble before long and this went a long way in sealing the fate of the pugnacious left-hander. The selectors -- Dilip Vengsarkar and Co. -- including Ranjib Biswal and Venkatapathy Raju on the present tour -- were keen to have Ganguly retained as late as on the second day of the Perth Test last week. They even toyed with the idea of recalling Rahul Dravid [Images], basing their argument that Rohit Sharma and Robin Uthappa had not done much of note in the domestic circuit lately. Dhoni though had different ideas and informed the selectors that it did not serve much purpose to include a player who could break down at some stage of the one-day tour. The argument against Ganguly also included the points that he was not of much use either in the outfield or infield and his fitness really became an issue after 40 overs. Vengsarkar, it is learnt, made a pointed reference about the runs which Ganguly still provides to the team. It met with the counter that the young Indian one-day captain did not believe the pitches in Australia would really be all that quick. More so since his lads had shown themselves to be quite capable of holding their ground on the overtly helpful pitch of Kingsmead, Durban, during the Twenty20 World Cup last September. The logic of a Twenty20 game being different from a proper one-day match did not quite pass the mustard. Vengsarkar, finding himself at a loss, apparently asked for a rethink on the fourth day of the Perth Test. This time Dhoni was accompanied in the teleconference by his deputy Yuvraj Singh. Yuvraj, apparently did not disagree that Ganguly was still useful for the runs he makes at the crease but he felt the fielding ability of the Bengal left-hander was a major issue. It, therefore, became a foregone conclusion that Ganguly would not be needed in the one-day series. It became the task of Biswal to break the news to Ganguly. Biswal initially told India's Test captain Anil Kumble [Images] about the impending move. The latter on his part nudged Biswal to break the news to Ganguly. The word from the Indian dressing room suggested that Ganguly's fitness was an issue even during the one-day series against Pakistan at home. It did not become a fully blown issue because of the tremendous form Ganguly exhibited at home, striking a double hundred, a century and a near one to top 500 runs against Pakistan last year. Apparently, Ganguly was conscious of being nudged out of the team and had spoken to selectors about at least affording him a big one-day series in Australia. http://www.rediff.com/cricket/2008/jan/22dada.htm
theguyinallblue Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 So "Ganguly's Boys" did not back him...:giggle:...
Guest HariSampath Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 Again, I find it ridiculous to call Dhoni's preference a "conspiracy" ...absolute nonsense. Dhoni has EVERY RIGHT to have a say in selection and he is the ODI skipper and has done tremendously well for India in that capacity, winning T20 world cup, winning Pakistan ODI and just losing to Australia ( and even here if we count the T20 win, we lost 4 games and won 3 games. not at all bad). I dont understand why people are reading motives behind just the normal gesture of Dhoni in wanting a younger and much fitter side. Afterall, the Rohits, the Gambhirs and the others were the ones who brought Dhoni a lot of victories and more importantly Dhoni is looking far ahead to the next world cup and probably wants to groom a bunch of youngsters in very tough conditions like an Aussie tour for ODIs , anything wrong ? If he didnt want Dravid and Ganguly, just accept it as a cricketing move and NOT a personal move. Neither two are in anyway competition for Dhoni, we all know that....and even when it comes to sponsorship , brands etc, Dhoni is so far ahead of even Sachin that the commercial factor too cannot be a reason by any stretch of imagination...so maybe the obvious is the truth: simply a captain's cricketing reason. So, we just have to accept it and move on because the reasons appear very valid too.
jalebi33 Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 Judging from the reactions both in this thread and in the media, Ganguly is overrated in the ODI format. This is a good opportunity to let high-potential players like the Rohits and the Rainas of Indian cricket to prove themselves and hone their skills. There are enough experienced players to pull them through. Indian cricket can't revolve around the BIG 3 forever. However, not giving Ganguly advanced warning is seriously messed up. Unfortunately I'm not surprised the BCCI would do something like that.
Guest HariSampath Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 ^...well it does look as if he was given sufficient advance warning , as he was dropped in the Aussie/ Pakistan ODI series at home, and he had requested selectors to give him one more ODI series, which they have not given.

Wish the farewell had been different but he should no longer wait for them to kick him from the Test side as well, he should just retire after this series and concentrate on his personal life.

If the Rainas and the Gambhirs flop in the CB series then he has to take the brunt of it. On the other hand even if they do moderately well his foresight needs to be applauded.
Guest HariSampath Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 ^...but that is a chance a captain always takes. If it fails we all will bash Dhoni, if it comes off, we all will create 10 threads each for gambhir, Raina etc..and Dhoni will be forgotten

Sourav is still very good as a test player and should play tests as long as he is fit and performing. ODIs..yes, his days are over, no doubt.
fineleg Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 Dhoni: Dravid and Ganguly batting not a problem - fielding and R-btn-W is the problem http://www.mumbaimirror.com/net/mmpaper.aspx?page=article§id=59&contentid=2008012220080122052337640a31ff087 Dhoni looked least bothered about the hullabaloo surrounding his decision to get rid of the seniors and has even admitted to those close to him that he asked the selectors to let go Rahul Dravid and Ganguly from his one-day team. “It takes guts to do that,” he reportedly revealed to those close to him. “I have no issues with their (Dravid, Ganguly and Laxman) batting. But it’s their fielding and running between the wickets which is a problem.” It’s good to the see the new captain having faith in his young side. But it should remain that way even if his team is run ragged by Australia and Sri Lanka in the one-day competition. I hope MSD does not talk so much abt selection. Better to keep it all behind the scenes.
Dravid Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 he said, “But you have so many flies on the BCCI wall that the news would have leaked in any case.” dhoni said that? :hahaha:

ODIs..yes' date=' his days are over, no doubt.[/quote'] It's hardly a matter of performance but more of dignity. Why wait till he is dropped by the selectors? If he fails in a series and he will be dropped anyway to be replaced most likely by Yuvraj. So its better for him to retire now when people will say he had more Test cricket left in him. After this series the Indian team will not really require his services anyway. We SA etc in home where Yuvraj can gain some batting practice(provided the pithes are like the ones produced in Bangalore and Kolkkata). Its better he plays for Bengal which needs him more than anything.
