Sachin Tendulkar gets Padma Vibhushan India's top civilian awards were announced on Friday. External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and star cricketer Sachin Tendulkar have been chosen for the Padma Vibhushan awards. Other noted personalities to be bestowed with the Padma Vibhushan include noted playback singer Asha Bhosle, chess wizard Vishwanathan Anand, mountaineer Edmund Hillary (posthumously) and industrialists Ratan Naval Tata, Infosys mentor N R Narayana Murthy, steel tycoon Lakshmi Narayan Mittal and hotelier P R S Oberoi. Nobel prize winner and noted environmentalist R K Pachauri, Delhi Metro Chief E Sreedharan, former bureaucrat P N Dhar and former Chief Justice of India Justice A S Anand complete the list of 13 personalities to be awarded the country's second highest civilian award. ****** The 34-year-old Tendulkar, who is in vintage batting form in the ongoing Test series against Australia, and chess wizard Anand are among five sportspersons selected for this year's Padma awards. Ace footballer Baichung Bhutia and swimmer Bula Chowdhury are named for the Padma Shri, while the late Edmund Hillary [images], the first to scale Mt Everest, will be conferred the Padma Vibhushan posthumously. Tendulkar, who made his international Test debut against Pakistan in Karachi in 1989 at the tender age of 16, received the Arjuna award in 1994 and Padma Shri in 1999. He was conferred the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, the country's highest sporting honour, in 1998. He was also chosen as Wisden cricketer of the year in 1997 while Time magazine named him in November 2006 as one of the Asian heroes. For the 37-year-old Anand, the award caps a brilliant phase in his illustrious career during which he rose to world number one after a series of impressive performances. Anand also won the inaugural Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 1991-1992 and Padma Bhushan in 2000. He won the Arjuna in 1985 and Soviet Land Nehru award in 1987. Besides, he also won the coveted Chess Oscar in 1997, 1998, 2003 and 2004. Bhutia won the Arjuna in 1999, becoming the fifth Indian footballer, after Gostho Pal (1962), Sailen Manna (1971), Chuni Goswami (1983) and P K Banerjee (1990), to be conferred the acccolade. For Bula, the first Indian woman to swim English Channel twice, the award is in recognition of her numerous long-distance endeavours. In a career spanning more than two decades, she became the first woman in the world to conquer the seven seas in five continents, a distinction she earned in August, 2004. Bula swam the English Channel in 1989 and repeated the feat in 1999, becoming the first Asian woman to conquer the channel twice. She then crossed the Strait of Gibraltar in 2000, Tiranian Sea in Italy [images] (2001), Great Toroneos Gulf in Greece (2002), Catalina Channel in the US (2002) and Cooks Straits in New Zealand [images] (2003). _________________________________________ This is the highest reward acheived by a cricketer I suppose. Sunil Gavaskar had been awarded Padma Bhushan.

I have been saying this for long, no award is befitting enough for Sachin. In fact, we should say Padma Vibushan gets Sachin, coz, in this case, its Sachin who is adding value to the award and not the other way around, which is generally the case.

Why Lakshmi Narayan Mittal ......Honest question?
:D Just now noticed it myself. Its actually Lakshmi Niwas Mittal, not Lakshmi Narayan Mittal And to the question, he is well and truly a role model for young entrepreneurs in India. Starting from a single steel plant in Far-East to now owning the BIGGEST steel empire in the world, with 10% market share, which is remarkable in the fragmented steel Industry, is a truly outstanding achievement ! Very well deserved, IMO

Why only sportsmen, business people, Politicians in this list? Why no Doctors, Social Workers and Scientists included or are their service not counted? These awards are given based on their influence and how much money they contribute to Indian economy.

That is not true. Doctors, Musicians, Scientists, Social Workers and Engineers have received PV in the past.

It is probably because of the sheer impact. If you have a Doctor who has impacted millions of life then I am sure he is a good candidate. I can tell you that many a scientist - Bhabha, Sarabhai, Abul Kalaam, MS Swaminaathan(Green Revolution), Verghese Kurien(Amul) etc - have been awarded many a times by Indian Govenment. Not so sure about Social workers though names like Baba Amte rings a bell. Compared to them a sportsman, a politician, businessman can impact a lot more people and the country so I suppose its only fair HC. xx

Fantastic sachin, I am one of the happiest Indians today. On the bharat ratna thread, I had strongly advocated for sachin to be awarded but had said protocol dictates that the Padma Vibushan be awarded before Bharat Ratna....and I am happy to note it HAS BEEN :-).. Sachin you are a genuine Bharat Ratna....just a couple of years wait...hold on...

Sachin Tendulkar – first cricketer to get Padma Vibhushan A day after he hammered his 80th century in international cricket, batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar on Friday became the first cricketer to be named the recipient of Padma Vibhushan, the country's second highest civil award. Before Tendulkar, the highest Indian accolade that cricketers had received was Padma Bhushan, the third highest civil award, which has gone to 11 cricketers, including Tendulkar in 1998. Playing his 146th Test, 34-year-old Tendulkar cracked his 39th Test century in the ongoing fourth Test against Australia in Adelaide. The former captain has also won the Rajiv Khel Ratna and the Arjuna Award, the two top sports prizes of the country, besides numerous other state honours. The announcement of the list of annual award winners comes just four days after British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said here that Tendulkar's was a 'strong case' for honorary Knighthood of the British Empire. The diminutive Tendulkar is arguably the most popular Indian sportsperson and he gets mobbed wherever he goes, be it within the country or overseas. When he takes to the crease in a match, the nation comes to a standstill. His millions of fans across the globe follow his performance closely, on television and internet etc. So far the stylish right-hander has amassed 11,769 runs at an excellent average of 55.77 in 146 Tests and broken many records. He has smashed 39 centuries - a world record - and 49 half-centuries. In 407 ODIs, he has amassed 15,962 runs at 44.33, smashing 41 centuries and 87 half-centuries along the way. After becoming the youngest to make his international debut, at the tender age of 16 in 1989 against Pakistan, this former student of Sharadashram Vidyamandir School in Mumbai has left an indelible imprint on the minds and hearts of his fans with his masterful batting and a mesmerising smile. Besides his batting, his biggest asset is his down-to-earth disposition. Even when he breaks records - and bowlers' backs - he remains as humble as ever. Arguably among the world's greatest in his trade because of his supremely skilful and breathtaking batting - even the legendary Don Bradman was impressed by his batsmanship and once invited him to his home in Australia on his birthday.
