But for Sehwag , we would have been 80-6 and then it would have all been over. Let us not forget that Lee, Johnson and Clark were bowling at their hostile best sniffing a victory and were mowing down the batters at the other end, and Sehwag was first counter attacking and then solidly defending to prevent an Aussie win, just see the scorecard and that says only half the story. Definitely one of Sehwag's best test innings and along with first inngs 63 , he should have been MoM, but Sachin was a sentimental choice

Bumper Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 This is the second greatest innings by an Indian in Australia (only behind Dravid's epic 221 on the same venue 4 years ago). Veeru was a 'one man scoring machine' getting to his 50 (when the team total was 64) and his 100 (when the team total was 128) in quick succession, before lunch. He batted time in the 2nd session, scoring a paltry 29 runs. Its a shame one of Veeru's best ever innings was curbed by the match situation (that forced him to bat time). I was hoping Veeru would go ballistic in the last session after he sees off a theoretical threat of an Aussie win. Too bad he didnt last!
cochise Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 If Sehwag fell...the pressure would have magnified geometrically in the dressing room. Shudders like an earthquake would have gone through them. It was because he scored the runs quickly and got India out of the trouble zone rapidly that no pressure was felt. He relieved it. And he looked so secure doing so after the early reprieve. However, he was under tremendous pressure. To save the test for the country and to save his place in the squad...and to take his batting to a level that he has not displayed before. It was a MAGNIFICENT innings that has made me feel that this guy, despite what he has done in the past, has the best years of his cricketing life ahead of him. He is going to be a phenomena. Man of the match was his by a very, very, very long shot...with all respects to Sachin. It was Sehwag's day and test.

Even if he had failed, he had scores of 29, 43 and 63 in previous 3 inngs and that was more than enough for the SAF series considering all our openers ( incl Dravid) failed in Aus and as of now we dont even have one opener, forget about 2 to replace Sehwag

If he fell cheaply and India were rolled, they would have considered him to be a risky prospect...hit and miss type that could always be dropped after a few failures for someone safer. With this innings, he has revealed a whole different dimension to his play and has shown this to the selectors. His place is now cemented into the side and much more stable than it would have been without this knock.
Guest HariSampath Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 ^...No.. for that matter even this 150 is no guarantee for a permanent place in the side ( as it should NOT be as I am a very strong supporter of the view that a good performance should just mean 1-2 tests more), what I meant was this particular inngs , failure or otherwise would not have resulted in Sehwag losing his test place for another couple of tests.
