Ponting is mediocre?

All I can say about Pwnting is' date=' his batting peak and the slump of bowling quality will draw very similar graphs.[/quote']
You play at what you're given. How can he go back and play Curtly Ambrose at his peak when he's retired ?
lol Anakin for a moment there it was like speaking to myself and graphic that wud be the classic retort from my close friend with whom i argue abt Pontings greatness..i concur with both ur views but since we all know that the quality of world bowling was so bad in the early 2000s and Ponting plundered runs at that time, in my opinion he shd be considered as a modern day great, in the sense that he shd not figure in the all time greats list just for the above 2 mentioned facts..i just cant somehow associate him as an all time great, like Lara or Sachin and i put him one step below them in the Kallis, Dravid category but in the top of the latter category..

Talk to me again when another captain goes to England, gets whooped 2-1, is the first captain to lose the Ashes in 20 years, and then as a retaliation, wins the next series 5-0, first Australian captain since 1920s - and wins the man of the series by leading with the bat. Again, first series loss at home in 15 years, and then goes to SA with not much of a changed lineup and wins back the series 2-1. He's a great cricketer - maybe not a great captain. Yeah, I make fun of him when he makes stupid comments and they come back to bite him. I would never say a word about his batting prowess though. He has a weakness - so does every other batsman in the world, really. And regarding the stats, last 3 years is from Jan 1 2006 -> Present;
year 2006 10 1333 196 88.86 7 0 - - 0 8 0
year 2007 4 192 56 38.40 0 - - - - 6 0
year 2008 14 1182 158 47.28 4 0 - - 0 13 0
year 2009 4 263 83 32.87 0 - - - - 6 0
I'd say thats not a bad record at all. You might disagree though. Innings by Innings breakdown for those 4 years:
1st match innings 2006-2009 32 1008 196 56.00 5 0 - - 0 6 0
2nd match innings 2006-2009 32 850 142 60.71 3 - - - - 9 0
3rd match innings 2006-2009 32 726 116 48.40 1 0 - - 0 10 0
4th match innings 2006-2009 26 386 143* 64.33 2 - - - - 8 0

I'd say thats an awesome record fora batsman. Yeah, so even in the stats you posted, I've posted the same with a bit of breakup, and mine say that he was awesome, while yours suggest that he hasn't been reaching his own standards.

Well I am looking at two things his RECENT form to show he has slumped and also the fact he cant play in certain conditions. In regards to his recent form, to me you judge that by his last years form. With great batters they have a little bit more rope so you can I suppose if your a bit of a fan judge them over a 2 year basis to help support them. I showed his last 3 year stats of ponting to show he has been consistently on a down trend for 3 years. You then included his form in 2006 to bump up his recent stats. I dont see that 4 year ago stats as relevant to his recent form. In fact those brilliant figures in 2006 highlight how far he has fallen since. As 2007 form onwards has been mediocre. You also have failed to address the FTB assertion. Please provide Pontings defence for his woeful performances on the spinning tracks of India and mediocre stats in swing/seam of england. Also no doubt his recent slump shows that he is not the same now the aussies aint that good anymore. As now he bats in big pressure situations, with out the comfort of knowing teammates would always deliver and bail them out and aussies would win. So suddeenly he now bats when aussies are 10/1 rather then 150/1 going at 4 an over with opposition on their knees. Or he bats now when oppo has 500 + on the board so he has massive score board pressure unlike before. Its a different ball game now for Ponting as the heat has been turned on him and his teammates and he has been found wanting to some extent!

The ashes will be very revealing....if the English bowl well, we shall see what Ponting is made off....I have seen an ashes rearguard innings from him that was great...he made 150 odd...can't remember if they went on to lose or save that match. However, let's see how he goes in a team that is not as dominant as before...it will show his true colours. If the English bowl well...we will have a good examination of him... if not, then we will have to wait till they play us again.

Ponting is in serious decline. Father time has ticked one tick to many. The evidnece is compelling. Even his odi form is in a slump. 2008 he avergaed 21. In 2009 averaging 26! Miserable series againt SA. Ponting should call it a day

Even ODI form has deserted him. Yesterday bastard got three lives still could score only 20 runs :finger: It's highly unlikely he'll get to play any form of cricket after 2011 WC !

Really? Are you sure he averaged 21 in 2008?

to be honest he's had a couple if injuries to his wrists....that kills you as a batsmen
..and people even lost count of the number of injuries Sachin suffered throughout his career, yet they expect him to be in top gear all the time :haha:

I'll tell you what, Tendulkar with tennis elbow was still a good batsmen in 05 and 06. Some gems he's played in those period, but he's got a lot more consistent now.

Your problem is you're putting context to numbers. I am sure some objective fans can teach you about #s here. BTW one or more of them are diehard Punter fans (objective of course), I'm curious to hear from them about the 20odd averages.

Decnet pace attack and Ponting's real worth which is mid 40 shines...... Ishant now Steyn is showing ponting's mid 40's average during heyday of pace bowling was not due to the fact that ponting had not matured, it was matured ponting but he is was and will remain good enough for mid 40's

Take it easy, I was just being sarcastic to the so called objective fans who would throw up stats without any context whatsoever.
