Sriram....you cannot equate showing skin to selling your body. People show their bodies to attract attention ...(like men like to show off their six packs ).That is the way nature has made all creatures. It is an important trick by nature to ensure survival....... Prostitution on the other hand in most cases is abuse of the body.

Precisely Beets. You are 100% right when you say, "even men show off their bodies", but what do you mean by "an important trick by nature to ensure survival" ? My whole point is this, be it a man or a women, if, in principle, they make a living out of showing off their body, either in part, or in full, then there isnt too much difference to me. Not to say that I condone/support such acts, but in my eyes, there isnt such a *VAST* difference between a prostitute ( be it a man or a women) and a model who poses nude for magazines covers.

HC...you can't equate kissing or embracing to having sex in public. We are a long way from accepting people doing it in public.
Well, for the record all porn movies dont go into having sex in public meaning intercourse. So you are saying it is okay to be a Nude model like a playboy star and you see them the same way as a model who sells other products correct? I'm with you on that!

You mean to say for just lesbians or gays? Common please dont pretend to be innocent to say that women dont watch other women indulged in sexual acts and men dont watch other men doing it
WTF? Lesbians and gays? What are you saying? Who are the target audience for say spot removal cream or make up accessories? Who are the target audience for sanitary napkins? You really think men watch these ads because they are sexy?! And this the same as a porn flick? I am sorry but I don't agree with either your logic or your line of reasoning.

No. You don't get it. A woman advertising soap or cosmetic products is aimed at the female market. Men may ogle at the advert but they don't go out and buy Nivea spot removal cream...wait a minute?! Don't tell me you have.....convinced by all the 'sex' in the ad?

Gambo, I totally disagree with when you say sexy women in ads are directed only at the women part of the audience. What will you say, when you see this ad ? DXAewxGeyTU Its an ice cream ad, is it directed at women ?

Looking at it from HC's point of view.....even using you skills ' date=' brains, strength should be prostitution. Just as the model is using her body to sell products...people use their brains, communication skills and sometimes strength to sell products.[/quote'] Excellent point. The question here is, where do we stop and draw the line to decide which is acceptable and which isnt ?

My response was to the photograph sriram. People like to show off their assets whatever they might be to attract others whether it is for friendship ,business or mating. Nature wants us to exhibit our assets so that we are more attractive to the opposite sex(which in turn ensures mating and hence survival of the species). What we exhibit is dictated by the culture and the rules of the society. While it may be acceptable for a young person to go topless on the beach in some liberal countries......in lesser liberal counties it translates to putting mehndi or bindiya etc. Using your assets for selling products is a different matter all together. If that is equated to prostitution ...then using your brains, special skills or physical strength also comes in the same category.

Why are you hinging on the target audience to make a conclusion. I'm only saying that a tennis player who is showing off more that she usually should show off and a porn star who is showing off her whole body are both trying to market a product.

Showing body and having sex are two different acts. Showing ones body is acceptable behaviour to a certain extent. Having sex in public is a taboo .
Best post Rads, from a woman's pov....please allow me to again assert ( forgive the crude and brutal truth of what I say). In todays context..a woman even scantily clad, and posing for advtsng a cosmetic is NO comparision to someone who openly facks on tv , and sells NO product except vulgarly explicit sex. Can all of you imagine a situation when you are with your 6 year old daughter and you both see a classic figure of a Cindy Crawford selling some product in a 2 piece bathing suit. Maybe your daughter and you too...can together exclaim " what a fantastic figure"...may be your daughter can say " wow Dad, isnt she sexy, wish I were that beautiful"...and in many ways neither of your or your daughter's sensibilities would be offended, because sexuality is part and parcel of a woman's beauty, appreciated by BOTH man and woman. But just imagine this ( not meant to offend)... can ANY of you picture yourself with your 6 year old daughter watching a hardcore porn film, and comment " did you see that....wow..howz he facking her like that..gheez she is shaking like hell...go go...hammer her...give it ..."..and can you imagine your daughter saying " wow Dad...he's banging like hell...she is terrific, just look at her getting facked"...I see how you would feel....the first case is possible without violating norms of decency, but the second instance is outright vulgar and clearly violating all norms of acceptable decency in any society anywhere in the world. This is why we have certain public norms like "universal", "parental guidance" and "adults", when it comes to watching tv/film footage/movies etc. By no means can anyone compare a lesser dressed model selling a cosmetic to a hardcore porno actress selling sex, and sex alone in a vulgar manner...just NO comparision.

Ok, understood it now.

Rather than what the society thinks of it, I am more interested in what, we, as individuals make out of it. As I said before, I dont see, in principle, too VAST a difference between a prostitute and a nude model. The only difference is, while there is an act of penetration in one case, it isnt there in the other case. So, Am I to understand the penetration is the ultimate test/benchmark of the sexual integrity of a person and as long as you dont indulge in that, you can do things however close to it and yet, not be looked down upon by society like how prostitutes are looked down upon. And actually, my grouse is not that the society respects these nude models too much , it is that it disrespects prostitutes unfairly. And what i say applies to both men and women. They are nude models from both sexes, as they prostitutes from both sexes also . But as you said, if that be the case, using any of our assets ( be it body or intelligence) can be construed as prostitution in some sense. I suppose all of have our lines that we have drawn to judge which is right and which is wrong, but my lines are bit more liberal than others.

Excellent point. The question here is' date=' where do we stop and draw the line to decide which is acceptable and which isnt ?[/quote'] Acceptable is something most people in general are comfortable with. Are you comfortable seeing your brother use his brain?...yes Are you comfortable seeing him use his brilliant oratory skills...? yes Are you comfortable seeing him pee in public?...probably no....:D Are you comfortable seeing him holding hands withs his GF? yes Are you comfortable seeing him make out in public?.probably no. Having sex for the viewing pressure of others still comes in the taboo category.

You are just not getting it. A porn star is not JUST showing off her body.(she's naked for a start and nothing of that sort ever happens in 99% of the ads/sports). She performs sexual(at times lewd) acts on camera. Graphic acts of sex. BJ/HJ/AS/FS/MAT etc etc. How is that same as Mary Pierce wearing a short tennis skirt and showing off her thighs while serving? As Hari said, if you think both are the same, you wouldn't object to a 6 yr old watching a game of tennis but would you object if they watched a porno or would you be ok since you consider both one and the same?

I was talking in a much more generic sense, and even though the OP WAS talking of women in cosmetic ads, the debate has moved well past that.

The difference is that the model is selling a" suggestion" where as a prostitute is selling the "act". As for respect...I would personally respect prostitutes more than politicians,a lot of cops ,BCCI clowns . Prostitution in most cases is an act of desperation which you can equate to begging for survival. In both cases there is complete loss of selfrespect of the individual. Yes I do agree with your view that it is very unfair.

Hari and Gambit, To set the records straight. I wont allow a 6 year old to watch anything that is ADULTS ONLY both on screen violence and sex.And I will discourage them from watching any advertisement or movie clipping that is sexually explicit in nature. My point is a nude model or a porn star who makes her living by selling her body is not much different from a model who covers her processions with less clothes and sells a cosmetic product. I agree with Beetle that having sexual intercourse in public is a taboo but all porn movies are not in this category!

^ The OP and debate are very much, in principle, a comparision between women showing off some/much of body parts for commercial marketing, and equating it to women having hardcore sex on camera on a commercial basis. The two are NOT the same , and CANNOT be justified as some percentage of other as both the aims are FUNDAMENTALLY different, and this discussion is going on perfectly as per OP, both by men and women..
