South Africa Test series set to trial TV referrals

The English county season tried this last year and on mutual agreement between all the counties, the system was abolished in 6 months. The main reason was that Hawkeye and Snickometer were not used. Therefore the 3rd ump relied purely on their perception (albeit they had the advantage of slo-mo). The questions to be asked are - Who can ask for the referral? Is an over-enthusiastic batsman going to use his teams three referrals because he distrusts the umpire? How soon can the player ask for the referral? The damning statistic for the ECB was that there were precisely 0.00 dismissals overturned in the 6 months of experimentation. More power to hawkeye and snickometer!

I wish they had implemented technology to rule front-foot no-balls first, without any referrels. Let the umpire get a beep whenever there is a no-ball. So, that he will not rule anybody out on a no-ball. The downside to it is, the batsmen cannot take the advantage of no-ball. Currently, he can go reckless whenever he hears a no-ball called by the umpire. He could have done that only for spinners anyway, so it can be sacrificed for the greater good. It is difficult to do for a fast bowler.

This referral thing is not going to work guys' date='trust me on that.[/quote'] It may not work only becos there are traditionalists and people who are impatient to get "any result" quickly even if incorrect result. A small pause to refer is worth it. If majority (of fans and players and officials) are focussed on a "good and fair" game, then this can be made to work out. Ofcourse there will be chinks and issues, but if people continue to invest and work on it, it will be for the betterment of cricket. Sriram: You saw Sydney, and you still say this? :dontknow:

There is no point in me saying the same thing, over and over again. Just wait and watch for yourself.
