coffee_rules Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Tatas gifts 65,000 books to poor US kids 28 Feb 2008, 1452 hrs IST,IANS WASHINGTON: The Tata Group North America has joined First Book, a non-profit organisation, in a programme to distribute 65,000 new books to children from low-income families across the US. Second grade students from Dodge Park Elementary School in Maryland were the first students to receive the brand new books on Wednesday with the support of the Tatas. The students participated in reading circles with Tata company representatives to celebrate First Book's mission to provide new books to disadvantaged children. Kyle Zimmer, president of First Book, said, "First Book is tremendously grateful for the generous support of the Tata Group and its companies, which will help to share the joy of reading and learning with thousands of children in need across the United States. "Through the magic of books, First Book and the Tata Group are helping children to discover new worlds and realise brighter futures." David Good, chief representative of the Tata Group North America, said, "The Tata Group has a long heritage of focussing on education in the communities in which it operates. We believe that doing good is doing good business and this is a good example of how we use our resources constructively to invest in future generations. "The Tata Group is proud that so many of our companies have pooled their resources and attention to make a difference in the education of so many children." First Book, a non-profit organisation with the mission to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books, has provided more than 50 million new books to children in need in thousands of communities in the US. They already do lot more in India ZP. Good to see Tata do philanthropy in USA as well. I mean otherwise what are they? A company that makes money in USA and siphons it off to India? If I was an American I would be might pi$$ed with that.

Yeah , as long as we let Prostitution go unchecked and don't educate illiterate people to make them stop farking and having 10 kids, poverty will always be a problem.

And failure to do(paying taxes) will land them both behind bars. You sound as if I should be giving credit to Indian companies, and employees, for following law duh! Any company that makes money has an obligation to pay back to the community it makes it money from. It is simple as that.
beetle Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I am sure all the people who have helped Indian poor people also have people in their own countries that needed help. It is good that Tatas have continued their good work out side of India too.

Its paying back to community.
Mandrake Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 Many multinationals operating in India are helping out in local communities and encouraging their employees to do it too. Good gesture by the Tatas, they have a good record of doing the same in India too since many decades. For example the prestigious Indian Institute of Science(IIsc) in Bangalore was set up by them and for many years was known as the Tata institute.
yoda Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 companies donate to charities for several reasons besides the altruistic ones: 1. they get tax a write off 2. it's good PR 3. helps promote good feeling amongst employees cause a lot of employee volunteers end up doing the actual charity work on behalf of the company
