So many Indians were sold as slaves in the market of central asia, bartered for horses. But a lot of them used to die in the long trek to central asia, especially because they weren't really given appropriate clothing, footwear, food etc to survive the journey. That is why those mountains came to be known as Hindu Kush. Bulk of those hindu slaves came from guess where? Present day pure land. This was the primary reason for the en masse conversions in those regions - I don't really blame them - if changing your religion meant you could possibly stay alive and not be enslaved, anybody would do that. Agreed on all the points but the name. Hindu Kush being noted as killer of Hindus (Kucha) is a maghrebi Arab root, used only by ibn battuta. A far likelier explanation is Hindu Koh, meaning Hindu mountains(koh in Farsi). Something that survive in many mountain ranges in Afghanistan themselves. I find this explanation more satisfactory, since eastern Afghanistan has always been culturally and economically integrated with India historically. So much so that dating back to Sassanid Persian times, the area south of Hindu Kush was known officially as Koochak-e-hind, meaning ‘little india’, with the south Afghanistan being divided into two provinces : Kabul being capital of one and Sarang being capital of the other. Sarang survives today as Zaranj.

And there are guys like Subhash Kak who go as far as asserting that Bactria to the NW and even the Tocharians to the NE were 'vedic' to a certain extent.

I don't know, but today Afghanistan is a foreign land to me. Their culture and language all are very different than rest of Pakistan. Forget about Afghanistan, even the Pashtoon Areas are foreign to me. As compared to Afghanistan/Pashtoon Pakistan, I feel very comfortable among the North Indians. Actually, I am more comfortable with the South Indians too as compared to the Pakistani Pashtoons. I remember, Siddhu (ex-cricketer) also said something like this that he feels comfortable in Pakistani Punjab more than South India.
