Harsh Thakor Posted April 17, 2020 Posted April 17, 2020 This is my all-time test statistically best XI of all time.It is a selection only on basis of statistics and not overall class or talent.Wish to asess whether pure statistics does true justice to overall stature of cricketers. Sunil Gavaskar Len Hutton Don Bradman (C) Sachin Tendulkar Steve Smith Jacques Kallis Kumar Sangakaara (W) Alan Davidson Glen Mcgrath Sydney Barnes Murlitharan Significant that in terms of pure stats stalwarts like Gary Sobers ,Shane Warne Viv Richards.Malcolm Marshall,Brian Lara or even Wasim Akram miss out.Davidson who was chosen to include left arm variety ,had a better bowling average than Wasim by a considerable margin and better batting average.Kallis considering aggregate and average is ahead of Sobers, marginally.Sanga was not as much a match-winner but stats wise ahead of Adam Gilchrist.Barnse average of 16.87 and 7 wickets per tset simply puts him on another planet just like Bradman with his average of 99.94.Tendulakars' run and century aggregate make him a unanimous choice just like Sunny as an opener. My morally best test XI Barry Richards Hobbs Bradman (C) Lara Tendulkar/Viv Sobers Gilchrist (W) Warne Marshall Wasim Mcgrath Only Bradman,Tendulkar and Mcgrath remain from the statistically best XI of all time.proves that stats hardly does all the talking.
zen Posted April 17, 2020 Posted April 17, 2020 (edited) Stats of a player can be influenced by a variety of factors including conditions, oppositions played against (say a player who has played a higher number of games vs Aus and SA vs. the one who has played most vs. SL and NZ in the same era), batting positions, and so on. Stats have to be used as a guide and to identify a pool of players to shortlist, then you have to make judgment calls and slots players based on your strategy/team combination. Picking teams just based on stats (which can turn out to be a good team too but not necessarily an optimized team) = doing sorting in excel My ideal test 11 at this point: * Gavaskar (Performances vs. top sides like WI. Technically solid. A circumspect to balance many swashbucklers in the 11) * Viv Richards (Performances as a top order batsman. A great player of pace bowling. And a swashbuckler to partner the circumspect Gavaskar) * Bradman (The ability to play high SR long innings and also be consistent. Well above his peers in his era) * Lara (A great player of both pace and spin. Can win you tests with the bat. Most big scores vs. major teams after Bradman) * S Smith (A gritty player. Will fight it out in the middle. Can perform in most conditions) * Sobers (One of the best batsmen ever. And a swashbuckling AR) * Gilly (An attacking WK batsman. Made a big impact as a WK batsman) * Hadlee (The master of swing and accuracy. Won his team many games in different conditions. Also an AR so adds batting depth) * Warne (The premier leg spinner. Also a relatively good batsman and fielder) * Marshall (The premier test match bowler. Like Warne, can bat too) * Ambrose (To support Marshall and Hadlee with pace, bounce, and accuracy. A great attacking bowler who can run through sides on his day. Someone who can defend a 150 or less score. Will be more lethal in the 4th innings w/ Warne) Edited April 17, 2020 by zen

Hadlee can do whatever McGrath can while adding batting depth & swing. Ambrose, who can also do what McGrath can, brings variety by blending bounce and pace to compliment Marshall and Hadlee in the attack. Wasim, also a great bowler, is more suited to ODIs than those he is being compared with. The 11 has skillful bowlers like Marshall and Hadlee. Hadlee is also highly intelligent. This is all relatively speaking.
maniac Posted April 17, 2020 Posted April 17, 2020 (edited) Stats may not tell the entire picture but they do tell most of it. For example you may argue caveats between someone who average in low 20s vs some one in the mid 20s with the ball or between 50+ and 60+ averages but you cannot justify a guy averaging in the 30s with the bat. If you look at the Op’s statistical X1 most of the names are ATGs or atleast 2nd tier ATG’s. Sunny,Sachin,Kallis,McGrath, Murali,Bradman- self explanatory Sanga- definitely a 2nd tier ATG. If you consider him a keeper bat then his stock rises further Steve Smith- rated as the best batsmen of this generation along with Kohli and on his way to be a ATG Rest were before my time so don’t rate them but looks like if you go purely by stats we are not way too off Edited April 17, 2020 by maniac
