Cricketics Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 all F1 Visa folkz.. need help.. i know a person, hez on F1 visa.. thing is he tried to cheat in an exam and was caught.. not so long ago.. what can happen?? do u know know about any other person who got caught? and got away with it?? he seems to be worried about it alot.
Ram Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 What do you mean ' not so long ago' ? At best, he will get an F in that course and at worst, he can be terminated from the program, but that happens if he is a repeat offender. Ask him to hope for the best.

The Outsider Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 Expulsion is very unlikely, though some schools are very strict about it and expel students on the very first offence if there is an honor system in place at the schoold like at Caltech. As for the course, he'll surely get a F on it. In the unlikely scenario that he is expelled he can try to get admission in some easy school to continue his visa status and then try to switch to a better one later on.

The Outsider Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 I really don't think so I am not an expert on immigration or anything but since the F-1/I-20 is tied to the school you are attending, one would expect that the person will go out of status if he is not enrolled full time in a school or carrying a valid I-20. In fact, international students have to maintain full time status during their courses - that's what the immigration offices at universities say.

THX_1138 Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 oh yes, academic dishonesty, when once on your record will discourage just about every graduate or post graduate school he applies to. i was once accused of academic dishonesty ages ago by a spiteful classmate who accused a bunch of us guys who aced a test while the class average was a 44. however, the instructor of the course felt that i was a good enough student to receive the grade i had on the basis of my own merit, and thus dismissed the allegation. the other three guys however were canned. one of them, my roommate was first suspended but the independent judiciary found him not guilty by a margin of 3-0. the other two were found guilty, but sued the university. till the case was settled, they received a stay order to continue their coursework and eventually made the university pay (when infact they had engaged in cheating), simply because the university was applying for Tier 1 status and could not afford the ill press of such a lawsuit. in the end, it worked out well for everyone except me, since on the insistence of the department chair, my test grades were disregarded and substituted with a makeup exam on which i received a B, thus reducing my definate A to a fracking B. Lost interest in engineering thereafter, struggled to complete my degree since my motivation was elsewhere... in Mathematics but in the end, the event was monumental for my life as it turned me toward the field of Actuarial Science, my eventual career path.
