Rajiv Posted March 2, 2007 Author Posted March 2, 2007 Re: NSG Commandos for Indian Cricket Team Team India to get NSG cover in Caribbean Islands PTI RSS Feeds| SMS CRI to 8888 for latest updates NEW DELHI, Mar 2: Indian cricket team will be guarded by elite National Security Guard commandos in West Indies during the World Cup Cricket because security arrangements in the Caribbean Islands were considered not up to the mark. The government took a decision in this regard after West Indies officials conveyed through diplomatic channels about their inability to provide elaborate security to the 15-member team, sources said. Some players of the team have been facing threats from Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Taiba. The NSG team would also comprise bomb detection and disposal experts and were scheduled to leave for West Indies soon. Two senior security experts from the Ministry of Home Affairs would be overseeing the arrangements there, sources said. The team led by Rahul Dravid, along with Coach Greg Chappel and BCCI officials, have left for West Indies on Wednesday night. Security officials who accompanied Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat during his visit to West Indies during November 9-11 had also conveyed to the government about the lax security in West Indies, sources said. This is for the first time that the NSG commandos would be sent for the security of Indian team anywhere outside the country.
THX_1138 Posted March 2, 2007 Posted March 2, 2007 Re: NSG Commandos for Indian Cricket Team Its interesting that the Indian team was permitted its own security detail! i think this is a first, usually no country permits security details to accompany tourists with the exception of bureaucrats and heads of state who travel with their details and the occasional celebrity but in both cases, the security personnels have very limited powers and often have to work in tendem with a liason officer. so either the west indians are really cooperative here or they are well aware of their own grotesque inequities or worse still, the threat is severe! anyone know about Black September in the 1972 Munich Olympics? it was said that the poor athletes died because of a botched attempt to rescue them by the German police and their unpreparedness for the situation add to that the periodic refusal of assistance offered by the Israeli government!
