ICC rankings are a joke

After Adelaide test, Labuschagne became the top ranked batsman. He had 912 points. He scored only one run in Melbourne, but his rating went up to 915. Scored just 28 and 29 in two innings at Sydney, but his rating got better, reached 924, somehow, just somehow.

This is not the first time I have seen something like this. I wish I had saved a draft somewhere. I will track all the stupid things with rankings here.

He was carrying a significant rating penalty for having played fewer than 40 innings, and that penalty being reduced as the sample size increases is larger than the rating decrease from scoring fewer runs.

Was wondering for years why it takes players so long to break into top 10. Finally got an answer.

 

Many including Conway, Kyle Mayers, Shaw, Voges, would have been no.1 batsman right after their debut. Will be great if you send me the link to the source or atleast the name of the subreddit.

The subreddit is r/cricket, the source is one of the comments under a post about rankings. It’s the latest post so should be easy to find. Let me know if you can’t, I’ll try and line the comment
