Australia were consistently the top brand for decades. Now there is a world cup seemingly every year. There are 3 types of world cups (ODI, T20, Test championship). Then there are champions trophies which shouldn't even count in the same veins as world cups. Because of the different formats. Think of it like chess, which has classical, rapid, blitz. In chess you even have annual rapid/blitz, and someone like Carlsen has become 20 times world champion (though purists will only count his 5 classical titles). He is great but also benefiting because of so many events, a luxury which past greats (pre-2012) didn't have. Similar in tennis, Masters 1000 didn't have that much prestuge before Big 3 era. And in fact in 70s and 80s, most top players didn't take Australian Open seriously, which affected many slam counts.

It's a biased and random event where teams can play against any opponent, decide on any random no. of Tests and the winner is decided by a one-off Test held in England which is a huge advantage to SENA teams. I would rate it as 1 point. Also CT should be 1 point as it's an ICC tourney held every 4 years. 0.5 point should be for regional tournies such as Asia Cup.
Strangering Posted March 9 Posted March 9 India can win more "ICC trophies" in 5 years of dominance as Australia did in 20 years of dominance. The point is that, trophy count does not provide the clearest picture. That is the point I was trying to make
putrevus Posted March 9 Posted March 9 Unless India can dominate in tests, it can be never considered equal to either Australia or WI great teams. Counting trophies is nice but quality of teams, Indian team is no match to those teams. WI never had chance to compete in so many ICC events in 1970s/80s. Gollum 1
Gollum Posted March 10 Posted March 10 ODI WC is the main thing, need to close the gap with Aussies there. 6-2 is terribly lopsided. Had we won in 23, would have been 5-3 and we could have surpassed them in a couple of decades.

Even in the post-2015 period, Aus test W/L is better than ours. We were ahead of them till GG took charge. I agree with you, have to be great in all formats to be compared to those GOAT teams.
Gollum Posted March 10 Posted March 10 (edited) Aussies have won ODI WCs in all continents. Heck, they have won more WCs in India than India !!!! 1987 and 2023 (Asia) 1999 Europe 2003 Africa 2007 North America 2015 Oceania When we finally beat them in a WC final, that will be the greatest achievement in Indian cricket history. And players who make that possible will be immortalized. Edited March 10 by Gollum
