also vs swing and seam in overcast conditions.

Part of the reason is adaptability issue. Be it is a bowler or batsman  it is not easy for everyone to switch between format seamlessly.  Some find it hard. Some find it easy. Kohli for a period could do that. But that style of innings building doesn't work anymore. He will be an all format player for sure. So he has to find a way to play. For example in the firs tinnings he well left the ball that came back in. In a T20 he would have played and probably would not have got out.  He never had to leave a ball in T20 or ODI. So he has no idea which ball to leave which ball to play. Kohli did pretty much exactly the same in his first tour.

43.4 whoah! after nearly an hour of snoozeworthy cricket, Plunkett has brought this crowd alive, he has two in two, Kohli is gone for a golden duck, he was looking to shoulder arms to a short of length ball that angled in, that nips in a long way and crashes into the top of off, wow, Test cricket 118/3

13.4 he's out leaving the ball again! Kohli looks dreadfully disappointed. He was on the back foot, shuffling and the ball has stayed on with the angle in at him. Dharmasena takes a long look and finally raises the finger. Ball tracker says it would have been on-field call, just about kissing off stump 26/3

But fixed in the 2nd tour. For Gill this is 3rd tour in cluding WTC final. Plus he did play county cricket. So he should be familiar with these kind of deliveries. If there is one  example i can bring up is Murali Vijay on the same tour. He faced more t han 1000 balls.  Faced 996 balls from the quicks.  Left 403 balls without any incident. He was impeccable. Kohli did try to replicate that.

Kohli had the hunger (even if not the ability) during his peak in tests. with flashy (i.e., gill), I don't see much interest from him in tests

Gill has played two test matches in England a year apart, not enough sample size to judge him or call him egsperienced in those conditions.

All in due time. Keep the faith. What would've helped is a couple of innings against county bowlers prior to the WTC match. I am guessing that he would have adapted with more match practice. Like @Sandz said, going from T20s to a test opener in England in 2 weeks time is tough.

Bottom line? BCCI / ICC scheduling did not put him in a position to succeed.

but it's not 1 test. he failed often as an opener in india, where he has played as an opener in ranjis. it's not just about WTC alone, but his overall attitude, skills, etc for tests

let us hope he sits and analyzes his game. My only worry about current gen is how much they actually want to shine in Tests.  We have this Pandya who can play tests if he wants, but he refuses. Then Kishan is not participating in Duleep Trophy. Deepak Chahar is not even having motivation to play for India in T20. Financilly they lose very little if they don't play Tests. That applies to both bowlers and batsmen.  Siraj gives some hope. Kohli genuinely showed interest in playing Tests and doing well there.  So he addressed his flaws atleast for a brief period. It is a different thing he is not addressing his off stump issues now as he has attained a status where he cannot lose fan base no matter how much he sucks.

Gill continues having this problem without being addressed. What is our batting coach Rathore doing? India should offer batting coach job to Dravid and appoint some other guy as regular coach.

This was in  June 2021 spotted by Laxman first

This is something (Foot movement against incoming deliveries) Shubman Gill requires to address, especially keeping in mind the England series in which Stuart Broad and James Anderson will test the right-hander with the ball coming in,” Laxman told Star Sports.

Having said that, there are still a few flaws that he needs to iron out. Gill has a tendency to play strokes with his front foot still in motion – something that was seen in his dismissal at Kanpur. That will, quite often, leave him vulnerable to balls pitched fuller.

The slow weight-transfer problem in Shubman Gill’s batting technique

Shubman Gill has just one problem with his batting: the slow weight transfer onto the front foot. Twice this ODI series, he has paid for that mistake off Kagiso Rabada. In the past, in Indian conditions again, Kyle Jamieson (twice), James Anderson and Mohammed Shami (in the IPL) have penalised Shubman Gill for the same error, cleaning up the sticks.
