vvvslaxman Posted March 16 Posted March 16 (edited) Watching some old videos..We have come a long way Irfan pathan from the 1970s. Consistent left arm inswing by GIlmour lol Batsmen were lodu batsmen. Leaving the incoming deliveries honing on the stumps. How poor they were against left arm inswing bowlers. Probably not express. vvvslaxman Posted March 16 Author Posted March 16 Starting with 2 slips. they had 4 slips at one point. ODI cricket has come a long way.
vvvslaxman Posted March 16 Author Posted March 16 This is an amazing thriller. Last wicket added 64 to beat pakistan. Wasim Raja misses a simple run out in 60th over
vvvslaxman Posted March 16 Author Posted March 16 Mohinder AMarnath looks innocuous. But on a length he gets prodigious seam movement. It troubled batsmen both in semi and final. Also Botham's dismissal is unplayable. Ball almost rolled from Kirti Azad. bowl_out 1
Ultimate_Game Posted March 16 Posted March 16 By default sports get better with time. It's nostalgia which makes oldies say that the old stars would wipe the floor in the modern world. That's not true at all. Players have become fitter, stronger, faster and more skillful, and expecting them to dominate now would be akin to sprinters from 1910s beating Usain Bolt - not happening. OTOH if you take Bumrah 40-50 years back in time, he would average in mid teens. People wear rose tinted glasses when reminiscing about the past. To them bowlers bowled 150kph+ when they were most likely bowling in 130s, or batters had an amazing technique when they were just slow and extra cautious. You have outliers like Bradman or Viv Richards but majority of the players weren't better than the modern players. That would defy what we've seen and go against the evidence seen across all the sports. Tillu, GoldenSun, BacktoCricaddict and 1 other 2 2

Nobody hardly has any bend. Even back in the days if you are willing you can do. The yashpal sharma six in the semi final by moving across was an amazing shot in that era. But that is part and parcel. Also back then field sets were by default aggressive. Srikkanth was ahead of time. Those lofted shots. Listen to English commentary when Cheeka played an over-ambitious shot and skied one. They were reprimanding him for committing suicidal shot

"The good ol' days" are just a myth. Certain attributes work from a bowling perspective. But from a batting perspective chalk and cheese. Those incoming deliveries from chris old are similar to how shami bowls except Shami does it at 140k. Shivam Dube should master that incoming seaming delivery. He will be deadly even at 130k with that height. Sarfraz standing 6'6" was potent with high release point. Tall guys have this distinc advantage.

Tillu Posted March 25 Posted March 25 The day Sri Lanka made the iconic West Indies team lick their own wounds. Not a World Cup video though.

If that 5.5 ft Lankan pacer was troubling "peak" WI with "pace", imagine what someone like Bumrah would've done back then I repeat, Bumrah would've averaged in mid teens if he had played in 80s, WI fans would've written songs about him and English would've written books on him. WI complained about throwing. Especially rumesh rathnayake. Gus logie's lip was bleeding.
Tillu Posted March 26 Posted March 26 Please change the thread title to Vintage cricket videos. Been seeing a lot of videos where the benefit of doubt always went to the Australians.
BacktoCricaddict Posted March 26 Posted March 26 Another Kapil fielding gem - probably the most impactful one ever

HimeshChaturvedi Posted March 26 Posted March 26 I know this is not the right place to ask but does anyone know why Greenidge only played 120 odd ODIs out of a possible 200+? He couldn't be injured for so many games, so must have skipped some intentionally. Can't find any info on this and AI mostly gives reasons without any proper source.
