IPL continues to munch away on test cricket

Recommended Posts

The SL board is not happy with the proposed dates of their next year's tour to England as it will clash with IPL and want the dates changed. Smart move by SL as we may have seen some timely retirements by their cricketers so they could have skipped the tests and played IPL. But looking at the dates mentioned below I see a major overlap and can't immediately see how things will pan out so that everyone is happy.

Sri Lanka's tour of England next year hangs in the balance with Mahinda Rajapakse, the country's president, instructing his sports minister to ensure that Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) propose alternate dates for the tour or decline the invitation of the England and Wales Cricket Board. Cricinfo has learnt that Rajapakse issued the instructions to Gamini Lokuge, the sports minister, after senior Sri Lankan players presented him on Wednesday with a copy of a letter they had sent to SLC chairman Arjuna Ranatunga seeking a clarification on the proposed tour from April 21-May 30. Those dates clash with the second season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), where 13 Sri Lankans are on contracts with the various franchises. One possibility SLC may offer the ECB is for the original plan of two Tests and three ODIs to be converted into an ODI series between May 21-30. Sources said that the idea of sending a second-string team to England was also mooted initially but dismissed. The letter does not mention the possibility of a player boycott, as is being widely speculated, but records the cricketers' disappointment at the timing of the tour and notes that they had been previously promised by SLC that the "IPL window would be clear in 2009 and 2010", the sources said. The 13 Sri Lankans on three-year contracts with the franchises, including Mahela Jayawardene, their captain, Kumar Sangakkara, the vice-captain, and Muttiah Muralitharan. Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, has already announced that the second season of the lucrative Twenty20 tournament will be held from April 10-May 29, 2009. A final decision on the situation is expected to be taken after SLC officials meet on Thursday to discuss the issue. Sri Lanka's England tour slots in the fixture gap caused by the ECB's decision to suspend bilateral ties with Zimbabwe and the cancellation of their 2009 visit.

Didn't we hear that BCCI was to change the dates of IPL to accomodate the players from England? What happened on that front? And how will Pietersen and Flintoff, who are apparently lined up for the next IPL, participate if it clashes with the international matches played by England?

That is the problem! BCCI is ruining everything due to a lack of proper structure, planning and vision!! Ever since I started watching cricket I just wished that they should have a media manager who only will speak up about their decision or plans. But here each and every of 8 vice presidents have to open their mouth without caring as to who is saying what! Wish we had a cricket board like CA.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has decided to allow its cricketers to play in the IPL next season despite the fact that the league clashes with Sri Lanka's tour of England. The move could have far-reaching significance for the game, with England's players - who missed out on the IPL's first season - likely to push for the chance to play next year Read the rest: http://content-www.cricinfo.com/srilanka/content/current/story/360568.html

Another reason to "celebrate" the rise of BCCI in world cricket. It is clear that this move with SL is basically to keep BCCI in its good books. One has to wonder if ever has any single organization does more damage to cricketing fraternity in as short a span?

I think that is a brilliant decision. This will separate the people who want to play for country, and those who wont to play for money. The players were pushing for the dates to be changed, so that they could play both. Now they have to choose. It's going to be interesting to see who chooses what.

Wow, the lankan board has given the players the option to skip the test series if they want to? Thats pretty surprising. BTW, what happened to the official BCCI/IPL policy that they would conduct this tournament within the FTP? If Shoaib Akhtar isnt allowed to play in IPL coz PCB had banned him, how come Modi do a volte-face on this alone and allow the Lankan players to chose between tests and IPL? Shouldnt they go back and play tests, like the Aussie players did?

well Sriram thats because Srilankan Cricket board is not as powerful as CA and they depend on us and jus agree with watever Modi has to say..but on a serious note yes even im baffled by this decision coz i thot players had to give playing for their country the top priority over IPL..Modi and BCCI are changing the face of cricket thats for sure..

Atleast for the next couple of years, the FTP should be given precedence over IPL, surely. After that, a window will be carved out anyway.

we can't blame the SL players...they never were going to play Eng till 2011... ICC FTP had no scheduled plan for SL team to play any game in april-may till 2011....and that why they signed the deal with IPL....and if they want to honour the contract then i don't see any problem in that... actually SL board should have consulted the players before agreeing to the tour programme ..
