Sarfaraz vs Jurel

Dhruv Jurel not really coming good against spinners for some time now , one can't be sure that he will play as a pure batter in 1st test.

It is now well documented that Jurel has problems playing off-spinners. South Africa's Simon Harmer got him thrice in four innings during the series against the Proteas.

In the practice game , he was out cheaply defending against an off-spinner.

Sarfaraz  has better range of strokes, including the conventional and reverse sweep, which he can play in-front and behind the square.

Jurel is way too overrated

He looks compact. Won a couple of tests in India. He is perceived to be technically sound due to his trigger movements. But he also has off stump channel weakness especially when it bounces. Somewhat similar to Karun Nair's weakness around the same channel against similar length deliveries. He hasn't fully reached the level of playing as a specialist batsman. DK did with MSD. But he was the opener. Can Jurel do that? I don't think so.

That performance happened in his debut series. Since then  he hasn't played a single match  winning innings and I'm not counting his runs against the West Indies at home

India has to back players who made 200s, 300s in domestic. That is where temperamentcomes in. Guys like Dravid, Laxman, Pujara massivey were good with that. If you are technically good ability to make big runs become an important criteria. Sure there were guys like WV Raman dumping so many runs in domestic but technically was not very sound. If India wants a no.3 they should go for  players who shows penchant for scoring big runs. Smaran has shown some promise. But i have seen him only in IPL which is not the best place to judge guys like him.

Within 12 hours of being confirmed as a replacement for Sai Sudharsan by the BCCI, Sarfaraz was with the Indian team in Colombo for a two-and-a-half-hour practice session.

None of the  bowlers could trouble Sarfaraz as he looked fluent during his session. He is renowned for his ability against spin, and he showed once again why that is the case. Exemplary footwork against the spinners, coupled with a solid defensive technique, was on display.

Isn't Sarfaraz known for playing big innings?  Would not mind promoting him to no-4

Gill is doing well at 4.

5 is the best possible.

Understand... But the repeated failure on spin tracks by our stars needs attention and promoting somebody with a temperament to play long innings.

Pant is not going anywhere. You need the ability to play brand new cherry if needed as Kela can get out first ball or Jaiswal.

Sarfraz will have a very small window which he has to make use of. There are many youngsters Raghuvanshi, Saeek, Mhatre, his own brother are one first class season away from breaking down the door. Given the lack of trust from management in him, the window is smaller than that is for others. He must make it count with a 100 in case they pick him ahead of Jurel. Although Jurel is a decent enough close in fielder sarfraz is very good at forward short leg.

yea.. shaik. And Malaware who is a no.3 batsman if i am right. Sai himself made a few centuries for A team. He is improving although i don't have much faith in him  until he fixes his issues.  I don't see him as someone making 200 runs in an innings.

Shaik rasheed will surly be no.3 for india like pujara. Malawar iam doubtful whether he is international class or not. Sai must score a hundred to get monkey off his back

DDP has woeful leaden footed technique. But he has atleast played there. Sarfraz with his bat hanging outside the off can be equally vulnerable as he is not used to playing new ball much. Jadeja for all his solid batting style can be vulnerable when he faces brand new cherry at no.3. India has iterated so many guys in recent times at no.3.

Last 5 years number of guys we have tried at no.3

Saw in the practice match that DDP's footwork has improved vs pacers. Even back foot offside play.

Let's see.

He is an exquisite timer. He reminds me a bit like Sadagopan Ramesh who was a touch player.  Was the best player against Pakistan in the 1999 series. But he gets caught on the crease. so he will be in trouble whenever ball is on the stumps and leaves him. Actually between Sai,Sundar, DDP... sundar has much more decisive techique around off stump. Sundar can stuck on low score forever at 3 a place where you also have to score quicker at times with aggressive field sets.

This was obviously true.

But I got the feeling in the practice match that he has worked on this aspect.

Washington's hitting ability against pace has improved significantly too. He doesn't work in LOIs because he needs time to get set and that is not an option as a LOI 7 or 8. But won't be a problem in test matches.
