DravidDaBest Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Batsman beware, new brand of wicket taker "Review System" has arrived. Review system is going to bring down the averages of current era batsman by few points. The variable "Benefit of doubt" is out of the equation most of the time. This is going to affect the leading run scorers more than the average ones. The likes of Sachin, Ponting, Hayden etc. just need ONE decision in their favor (especially early in the innings) to score big. Whey they get that (Benefit of doubt decisions or bad umpiring decisions) in their favor, they make it count. Whereas the lesser batsman don't take a full toll of it. Previously umpires think twice to give a batsman like Ponting, Sachin out to a close decision but not anymore. On a whole, the sum of decisions against the batsman will be more than the sum of decisions in their favor based on the review system. Whereas it was the other way in pre-review system era. Since more and more lbws decision will be boldly given out now, the likes of Kumble, Mendis, Styris bowlers going to get more decisions in their favor as they bowl wicket to wicket. The review system is going to favor the following (starting with with the highest beneficiary) 1. Umpires 2. Wicket to wicket bowlers 3. Batsman Umpires will make their decision boldly without much pressure as there is always someone to correct them if they make mistake. Now the onus will be on the playing teams to make correct decision (in terms of appealing for the review). The umpires going to give lbw decision against the batsman even if they stretch long way forward. Batsman will be looking to play with the bat more than the pad because of the fear of lbw decision. Hence, more runs will be scored in test cricket. I think its an interesting concept on a whole.
cowboysfan Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 good stuff. I love the review system-even though we have sucked **** so far in in implementing it.We could have 2 no's in the last innings if we have called for it.we will get better though.the umpires are not going to reverse LBW's unless overwhelming evidence to suggest otherwise.
SachDan Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Good article. You could have expanded it a bit more. Do disagree with your analysis of umpires being lenient in giving decisions against big players like Sach..Ponting etc.Infact Sach..has been at the receiving end for most of the last season than any other batsmen.
The Outsider Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Agree with you, but I don't think it's going to hit good batsmen across the board. Batsmen who don't move their feet early on too well are likely to bear the major brunt like Ponting, Laxman etc. What I really like about it, is the encouragement it will give to wicket to wicket bowlers who have long suffered from the benefit of doubt given to batsmen who would plonk their foot down the pitch. Imagine if this system was in place when India toured WI and Kumble literally tore his hair out with frustration thanks to Jerling. Unlikely we'll see farce like those or Sydney anymore.

Though Sachin has got few terrible decisions, but the umpires always think more before giving a batsman like Ponting, Sachin out than the likes of say Dinesh Karthick, Kamran Akmal types.

I agree that its going to affect the likes of Pontings, Laxmans more than the Sachins. But howoever good the player is, his feet movement is not that good at the start of the innings or when they're in poor form. I think Ponting is going to suffer more than anyone.
SachDan Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Though Sachin has got few terrible decisions' date=' but the umpires always think more before giving a batsman like Ponting, Sachin out than the likes of say Dinesh Karthick, Kamran Akmal types.[/quote'] Long back that was the case...Of late most umpires think those kinda decisions will add to their reputation and any 50-50 changes invariably goes against the great players.
DravidDaBest Posted August 1, 2008 Author Posted August 1, 2008 Long back that was the case...Of late most umpires think those kinda decisions will add to their reputation and any 50-50 changes invariably goes against the great players. I remember Aleem Dar gave Sachin out wrongly in Mumbai and the entire crowd was booing him whole time and he felt so uncomfortable and he immediately gave a not out decision (favoring India) which was clearly out . Whether we admit or not, they always feel the pressure.
punjabi_khota Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Benefit of doubt in case LBW still stands. Only the howlers such as given out in case ball pitched outside leg will be reviewed. The review system won't affect too many LBW decisions, as LAL was saying. I don't think it will affect the cases where batsmen stretch forward too much. Lately, umpires have been willing to give them out if it hits in line, and that trend will continue. The review system DOES NOT use the predictive technology.
umpire Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 I think apart from the reveiw system. 3rd umpire should be given authority to call on field umpire and help them find their mistakes. There are times like Rahul Dravid decision, 3rd umpire should have immediately told on field umpires that dravid is not out. There are times when umpires don't ask for thrd umpire for run out decision. 3rd umpires should quickly call umpires and ask them to refer to them when they see the decision was very close
King Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 On the contrary it may help the batsmen. I'm sure it will help the bowlers too. I've seen so many instances of bad umpiring decisions concerning caught behind and LBWs. I've seen guys like Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid robbed so many times. Similarly I've seen the likes of Ponting getting a lot of decisions going his way. It could hurt a few but will also help a few. All in all this is the way it should be. I still think ICC should allow the 3rd umpire to use hot spot and snicko. I have my doubts about hawkeye but hot spot and snicko are very reliable.
fineleg Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Overall, I think Review system will help the game in the long run. If bowlers get some additional advtg over batsmen, then  High time bowlers got help to compensate for the already batsman favorable rules.
