Why? 1. Records speak for him 2. He played in an era where Indian team was probably weaker than now or in the 90s 3. He faced a much higher quality pace attack from WI, Eng, Pak, NZ & Aus 4. No helmets 5. Copybook technique 6. His grit and determination was second to none 7. Everytime he was humiliated, he fought back 8. Played many match savings innings, or a lone warrior innings and some match winning innings (problem is India hardly won at that time) 9. Retired gracefully on his terms.

On the fourth one there should not be any debate.It has to be VVS Laxman and if not for fixing Azhar will languish at the fifth spot and you can pick either Dada or Vengsarkar in the next spot. Missed out on some legends in Vijay Hazare,Lala Amarnath,Vijay Manjrekar etc.

Gavaskar was an exceptionally good batsman. Definitely one of the best test openers in the world. If you make a best ever world 11, Gavaskar would be one of the best choices for the opening slot. Yes, he is the best test batsman India ever produced.

Sunil Gavaskar is easily the best test batter that India has produced; in fact as a pressure player I'd put him right at the top(even ahead of DGB)... Sunny always played with a slight chip on his shoulder and this helped India more often than not. Remember that tiff with Lillee at MCG 81? it galvanised the team to a most unlikely win. How many great 4th innings have the current Fab 4 played? Gavaskar has atleast 4 that roll right off the tongue: Port of Spain 76(102), Oval 79(221), Chepauk 86(Tied Test 90), Bangalore 87(His Final Innings 96) Port of Spain & the Oval were 400+ run chases... Chepauk was 350 and Bangalore was 220 out of which Sunny made a magnificent 96 which I think is required viewing for any international batter to learn to play spin. India could have won all 4, if he had adequate support. As it turns we won only at Port of Spain... Even the most rabid fan of the Fab 4 or 5(including Sehwag) can't say they can chase even 200+ totals...

Wrong on both accounts. Sunil Gavaskar is right up there as India's best batsman but please keep things in perspective. As a enthusiast who has see Sunny in his pomp he was superb, and to me a more complete Test batsman that Sachin/Dravid/Sehwag/VVS etc. However I would also say that he was one reason why Indian team in 80s did not win as much as it did(complete opposite to what you say in point 8). Sunny's record in 80s, specifically under Kapil Dev as skipper is worse than his overall career record. Indeed in the time Kapil was the skipper Sunny had terrible overseas tour in West Indies, Sri Lanka & England. The only overseas trip where he did anything worthwhile was when India toured Australia in mid 80s, a series India should have won 2-0. At this time Indian team was basically a two man band with Kapil Dev and Mohinder Amarnath standing up. The kind of players India had, Sunny and Vengsarkar were very good batsman, India should have done lot better than what they did in the period. Of course it could be a case of running in bad form or merely case of age, still I do wonder if Sunny put his best performance under Kapil Dev as skipper. xxx

WRONG! You have the WI touring India in 1983-84 when he scored 121, 90 and 236*. He was the only shining star in the that series for India. There were a few others, I have to dig up

The QUALITY of the runs scored by Gavaskar and Dravid FAR outweigh the quality of runs scored by Sachin. When we say QUALITY, we mean the benefit to the TEAM.

Don't you remember the days when just one man used to carry the burden of an entire team in the batting and was it his fault that the colleagues around him were more concerned about money than winning the matches for the team? This Indian team started winning big abroad consistently only from the 2000's not before that.
