Delhi v Rest of India, Irani Cup, 1st day, Vadodara Ishant's accuracy keeps ROI to 252 The Bulletin by Nagraj Gollapudi in Vadodara September 24, 2008 Delhi 21 for 0 (Chopra 16*, Gambhir 4*) trail Rest of India 252 (Jaffer 50, Ishant 3 for 22, Sangwan 3 for 57, Nanda 3 for 60) by 231 runs Scorecard and ball-by-ball details How they were out 364253.jpgIshant's second spell of 7-2-14-2 gave Delhi the momentum to bowl Rest of India out for 252 © AFP Ishant Sharma bent his back on a benign pitch to help Delhi restrict a star-filled Rest of India batting line up on the first day of the Irani Trophy. He triggered a dramatic collapse after a free-stroking Wasim Jaffer and a circumspect Rahul Dravid had raised 77 runs for the first wicket. From 105 for 1 at lunch, Rest of India slumped to 187 for 8, before a mix of adventurous strokes from the tailenders gave a semblance of respectability to the innings. Ishant extracted variable bounce from a pitch that offered no pace or lift to bring the game alive in the post-lunch session. Even in the first session, he had managed to trouble Dravid enough to induce an exasperated slash outside the off-stump, and he eventually got his reward by trapping him lbw with an incoming ball that had a hint of reverse-swing. He also harried VVS Laxman with a few balls that climbed up the batsman's throat. Ishant claimed Badrinath soon after when the batsman played on to a length ball wide outside off stump. Badrinath had survived a similar shot earlier when an inside edge missed the stumps on its way to the fine-leg boundary. Mohammad Kaif survived a close leg-before appeal from Ishant but by then Delhi were in charge. His second spell of 7-2-14-2 allowed the other bowlers to turn on the pressure. At one end Chetanya Nanda, the tall legspinner, bowled an unbroken and tidy spell of 17.1 overs after lunch, while medium-pacer Pradeep Sangwan angled deliveries away from Rest of India's right-hand line-up. Dhoni edged one such delivery and Aakash Chopra, who had dropped Dravid on two, didn't falter this time. Laxman had already departed trying to loft one over midwicket. Anil Kumble, the Rest of India captain, chose to bat knowing the wicket was slow and could disintegrate in the next few days. Through the first session, with the ball keeping low, Delhi's fast bowling trio of Ashish Nehra, Ishant and Sangwan found it hard to beat the bat. But the contrasting styles play from the Rest of India openers allowed Delhi to experiment with the bowling. While Jaffer was using his wrists to drive across the ground, Dravid was biding his time before he could open up. But Dravid looked scratchy throughout; the life he received from Chopra's dropped catch was off a shorter delivery from Ishant that hit him on the thigh and deflected towards the second slip. Replays suggested he had inside-edged it. Jaffer hit successive fours off Sangwan, the first clipped to the leg side off a fuller delivery and the next between cover and mid-off. Sehwag introduced spin after the first hour and got his first wicket soon after. Jaffer reached his fifty with a single off Nehra but once again he failed to convert it into a big score, falling in Nanda's fifth over. He tried to push a flighted delivery to midwicket but got a leading edge instead, which was caught by Virat Kohli, positioned at short cover for that sort of error. The tailenders, RP Singh, Munaf Patel and Harbhajan Singh, added 65 for the last two wickets. They rotated the strike and combined slogs with clean hits to give their side a competitive total.

Rest of India build on Munaf's spell Munaf Patel's sustained spell of hostile fast bowling and a steadily-developing partnership between Rahul Dravid and S Badrinath put Rest of India well ahead of Delhi with three days to go. More... Delhi v Rest of India, Irani Cup, 2nd day, Vadodara Rest of India build on Munaf's spell The Bulletin by Nagraj Gollapudi in Vadodara September 25, 2008 323695.jpgMunaf Patel's hostile burst swung the momentum back Rest of India's way © AFP Rest of India 252 and 99 for 1 (Dravid 34*, Badrinath 33*) lead Delhi 177 (Sehwag 46, Munaf 4-31) by 174 runs Scorecard and ball-by-ball details How they were out Munaf Patel's sustained spell of hostile fast bowling and a steadily-developing partnership between Rahul Dravid and S Badrinath put Rest of India well ahead of Delhi with three days to go. After Munaf mixed nagging reverse-swing with seam movement to help bowl Delhi out for 177, Dravid and Badrinath overcame the early loss of Wasim Jaffer to add an unbroken 55 that gave Rest of India a 174-run lead at stumps. That Dravid and Badrinath got a chance to bat today was thanks largely to Munaf, who ended a threatening Test reunion of Virender Sehwag and Aakash Chopra, and took two others in the same spell. Having lost Gautam Gambhir to the seventh delivery of the morning, Sehwag and Chopra looked like they would get Delhi to an important first-innings lead. Enter Munaf, who lit up a stirring contest in the first session to swing the momentum his side's way. Chopra and Sehwag hit some stunning boundaries and hustled for singles with the urgency of commuters forcing their way past the closing doors on a Delhi Metro. Just when Delhi started to steadily push hard on the accelerator, Munaf was called back. In a heated spell - he and Chopra exchanged words after the batsman pointed him back to his mark - Munaf successfully played the card of what Steve Waugh called 'mental disintegration'. Just after an unhappy Sehwag tried to intervene, Munaf struck in his second over to dismiss Chopra. Forced to fend at one that hit the seam and straightened, Chopra's thick edge was brilliantly picked by Mohammad Kaif at second slip, bending to his right. Uncontrollable, Munaf charged towards the departing batsman and jumped high and punched the air in ecstasy. Kumble set an attacking field for Virat Kohli - two men standing close on the on side - and Munaf surprised the youngster with a bouncer. Kohli clumsily tried to fend off but feathered an edge to Mahendra Singh Dhoni. When Delhi most needed their captain to bat out time, Sehwag stepped out and lofted Anil Kumble straight out of the ground for six and pulled four. Flashing a hard cut at an innocuous Kumble legbreak, Sehwag was well held by a diving Dravid at slip. A brilliant dive from Dhoni to pick up Mithun Manhas, and thus giving Munaf his third wicket before lunch, was in keeping with Rest of India's superb fielding. Munaf, Kumble and Harbhajan Singh proceeded to bowl Delhi out for 177 in 57 overs. In challenging conditions where the bowlers were getting reverse-swing on a pitch with variable bounce, Dravid and Badrinath later dropped anchor. Dravid read the length perfectly, leaned into his strokes quickly and middled the ball confidently. Time and again when the bowlers pitched it short he played with soft hands. At the other end Badrinath finally provided proof as to why he should stake claim in the Indian middle order. Ishant Sharma fired his 140kph bullets but Badrinath was more certain of the line and length and placed the ball accordingly. When Pradeep Sangwan teased him with an angled delivery, he opened the face of the bat to direct the ball between third slip and gully for his first boundary. When Ishant pitched it on a length and brought it in, Badrinath got into position quickly to steer it to third man for four more. A perfectly-executed cover drive followed next ball. And when Ashish Nehra dropped short, Badrinath moved outside the line to pull strongly. Dravid and Badrinath's partnership successfully built on Munaf's three-wicket burst before lunch, and put Rest of India firmly on top of proceedings.
