beetle Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 Terrorism a challenge for both India and Pakistan: Manmohan Harish Khare Welcomes advent of democracy in Pakistan; peace can be brought about, he says ON BOARD THE SPECIAL AIRCRAFT: A day before his scheduled meeting with Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh felt that the task before the leaders of the two country was to convert challenges (of disputes) into opportunities (of cooperation). The Prime Minister was interacting with the media, en route from Frankfurt to New York to attend the General Assembly. Asked what his message would be to President Zardari, the Prime Minister replied that “Indo-Pakistan ties are about challenges that we have to meet, and convert them into opportunities.” “Peace can be brought about between India and Pakistan, we can work together,” he said about the possibility of relationship with President Zardari. Welcoming the “advent of democracy” in Pakistan, the Prime Minister said cross-border terrorism was “one of the challenges” the two leaders and the two countries had to meet. Pressed whether he would bring up with President Zardari the question of attack on the Indian mission in Kabul, the Prime Minister said he would share the information on the subject (with the media) after his meeting. Asked if the American military strikes deep inside Pakistani territory were leading to “destabilisation in South Asia,” he confessed that it was a “very unusual situation and we are studying it.” To a question whether the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls would be held as per schedule, he said it was a decision for the Election Commission to take. Asked whether a political judgment was needed to be made if the time was right for elections, Dr. Singh wryly noted: “Is it ever a right time for elections?” As to whether he himself was contemplating contesting the next Lok Sabha poll, the Prime Minister said he would “cross the bridge when we come to it.” On the domestic front, Dr. Singh was asked whether a new anti-terror law was needed. He replied that it was not a just a legal problem, and the issue was “quite a complex one.” “I have not reached a conclusion yet on a new law. Ram Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 Its very easy for us, to sit in the comforts of our living room and make scathing remarks about the leaders who are in power. Make no mistake, Dr.Manmohan Singh is as patriotic as me or you. If anything, he must be even more patriotic than any of us, given how he has sacrificed so much to be in public office, whether it be as Governor of RBI, MP or now, as PM. Only, most of us who routinely take our leaders to task for not talking tough fail to understand the rammifications of some belligerent press statements. One misinterpreted statement could lead to disastrous consequences. Just imagine what could have possibly happened had Singh told 'We hope the new Pakistani govt takes affirmative action to stop the terrorists. Our patience is running out'. That single sentence can mean so many things, so many people would have speculated on what Mr.Singh actually meant. The stock markets would have become nervous, even sparking a sell-off. Thousands of people would have lost many thousand crores of rupees. If you're in high power, you cant make statements in all black and white. Its better to judge our leaders by what they do behind the mike, rather than what they say in front of it. The pity is, most of us only know the latter.

He is the primeminister of a country at war...a country that has been at war for many years. You think the bomb blasts don't effect the market(not that that should be the PMs primary concern) Don't you think a seriel blast every month is going to effect investments. And what makes you think Manmohan Singh is doing anything lesser than what the previous PM did? Do you know the actual facts of figures of terrorism related incdents during the previous govt and the current govt? Of course the PM has resposibility of providing security to his citizens, but I would rather prefer he ACT tough, rather than TALK tough. Tough talk manages nothing but making everyone feel insecure and uncertain. And what sacrifices has he made to be in various offices? He is just doing a job that many in this country would die or kill to have.And he is doing a bad job at that That comment is in such bad taste. Dr.Singh literally resuced the entire country from bankruptcy in the 90s, when we were facing a terrible FOREX crisis. How many sleepless nights he must have spent, formulating plans with other economic advisors, how many phone calls he must have made to various leaders around the world, how many long and arduous tours he must have taken to convince world bank chiefs about the merits of India, how many painstaking meetings he must have attended to convince other political leaders about his plan..... Manmohan Singh is no Rahul Gandhi or Asif Zardari. Sure, he isnt the most popular mass leader, but he's done more for the country than most people.

And I don't understand how a prime minister could say that the newly elected President of Pakistan was not in contrl of Pakistan....but didn't have the gall to say anything against ISI and its terrorist activities. And howdare he compare the terrorism in both the countries. This country has been bleeding us for decades and in his single statement he has equated the victim with the terrorist.

Do you mean to say - we should wait for another attack on the parliament, to await strong worded statements that say "We know that ISI is behind these attacks and we have to get co-operation from the governing body to resolve this issue?" Why the heck do we care of whatever happens in Pakistan ? They can do whatever they want..like kill their own people... What pisses me off is that we have lost countless citizens & heroes, suffered huge capital losses and have to devote great amount of energy just to combat cross border terrorism. And our leaders still hope that neighbor will suddenly develop soft spot for us. Pakistan will not leave a chance to bite us in the name of co-operation..I would never trust or work with them We need young leaders with some guts:isalute:

Our issues with Pakistani terrorism is not for verbal jousting on the media - let the Army, RAW etc. handle that. The 'sabre rattling and stern stance' doesnt do anything except make us look like paper tigers. Atleast, take a stern stance, when you are CAPABLE of taking a stern stance - if you can't do anything about the cross border terrorism and yell 'we wont tolerate this' but it goes on anyways, all it does is make us look like a whiny b!tch of a nation. I prefer the 'either be a tiger or STFU' mode, not 'act like tigers when you are incapable' mode. Thats even more embarassing. I'd much rather have this kind of talk comming from the Indian Prime Minister, instead of what some of you folks are advocating here - which is nothing more than being 'Baghdad Bob' with his ' Iraq will crush America' speeches while the F-16s bombs the ***** outta Baghdad.
