India ‘A’ takes on New Zealand ‘A’ Karthik Krishnaswamy Chennai: New Zealand ‘A’ begins the second leg of its tour cricket of India on Sunday, as it takes on Suresh Raina-led India ‘A’ at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in the first of two four-day games. Two changes have been made to the Kiwi squad that played the just-concluded ‘A’ team tri-series, seamers Iain O’ Brien and Trent Boult replacing Mark Gillespie and Jeetan Patel, the side’s top wicket-takers in the one-dayers. Solid seam attack Test bowlers O’ Brien, Michael Mason, and Johannesburg-born all-rounder Grant Elliott, give the seam attack a solid look, but spin options in Patel’s absence are thin, with off-spinning all-rounder Nathan McCullum, who bowled just 11 overs in three matches in the tri-series, the only frontline spinner in the squad. New Zealand ‘A’ coach Mike Hesson, however, said that the side can cope. “Nathan McCullum’s played a lot of first class cricket, and Aaron Redmond is a more than useful leg-spin bowler.” With the resources available, New Zealand ‘A’ has only one decision to make regarding its bowling composition. “We’ll decide on the day, but we’re likely to have three or four seamers,” said Hesson. Of the pitch, he said, “It’s quite an abrasive surface, so I’m sure the ball will get scuffed up early, and the ball will probably reverse later on in the day, and obviously their spinners will play a big part, as we expect in India.” If the wicket indeed behaves as Hesson expects, India ‘A’ has the spin attack to capitalise, with Amit Mishra and Mohnish Parmar, not to mention all-rounders Yusuf Pathan and Ravindra Jadeja. After a practice session on Saturday, coach Dav Whatmore indicated that both Mishra and Parmar were likely to play. “We haven’t picked the team; we only finished (the tri-series) yesterday, but I would think — good chance (the) main spinners should play,” he said. No injury concerns With no injury concerns, the only absentee from the squad is left-arm seamer Pradeep Sangwan, engaged in Irani Cup duty with Delhi. India ‘A’ will have to choose among Sudeep Tyagi, Dhawal Kulkarni and Ashok Dinda for new ball options. “If we play three, then there’s no choice,” Whatmore said. In the unofficial Tests against Australia ‘A’ earlier this month, India ‘A’ played five bowlers, with depth provided by wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel batting up the order, and Piyush Chawla scoring runs at seven. Neither is in this squad, however, and the four-bowler option might be deployed. The onus of providing balance in that case is Yusuf Pathan’s; he offers reliable off-spin in addition to the middle order menace that produced a six-studded 148 against the same opposition, on the same ground, during the tri-series. Two of M. Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan and Sahil Kukreja should open the batting, with last season’s top Ranji Trophy run-getter Cheteshwar Pujara slotting into the middle-order alongside southpaws Raina and his deputy Jaydev Shah. The teams (from): India A: Suresh Raina (capt.), Jaydev Shah, M. Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, Sahil Kukreja, Cheteshwar Pujara, Yusuf Pathan, Ravindra Jadeja, Wriddhiman Saha, Ashok Dinda, Dhawal Kulkarni, Sudeep Tyagi, Amit Mishra, Pradeep Sangwan, Mohnish Parmar. Coach: Dav Whatmore. New Zealand ‘A’: Peter Fulton (capt.), Brent Arnel, Neil Broom, Grant Elliott, Iain O’Brien, Martin Guptill, Greg Hay, Nathan McCullum, James Marshall, Michael Mason, Trent Boult, Aaron Redmond, Bradley Scott, Reece Young, B.J. Watling.

Does anyone else think that the prescence of Kulkarni and to a lesser extent Dinda' date=' neither of whom have proved themselves at FC level is a bit of a joke. Seriously, are the Ranji and Deodhar Trophy performances totally moot now? Ie. Where are VRV Singh and Praveen Kumar?[/quote'] I do not know where has VRV Singh got lost. About two months ago I had read somewhere that he was getting treatment to his injury out of the country, maybe in Australia. And as for Praveen Kumar, selectors seem to look at him essentially as a One Day bowler. Or perhaps he too was not 100% fit when India A played that final with Australia A. Now the first unofficial test between India A and NZ A has started and the report of Day One is: India A v New Zealand A, 1st Test, Chennai, 1st day McCullum gives NZ A opening honours Cricinfo staff September 28, 2008 New Zealand A 36 for 0 trail India A 248 (M Vijay 45, McCullum 6-90) by 212 runs Scorecard A career-best 6 for 90 from Nathan McCullum, the offspinning allrounder, helped New Zealand A take firm control of the opening day of the first Test against India A in Chennai. India chose to bat after winning the toss and were bowled out for 248 in 75.4 overs, after which New Zealand's openers took stumps on 36 for 0. McCullum, the older brother of New Zealand international Brendon, triggered India's downfall after a promising second-wicket stand of 71 between Shikhar Dhawan (27) and Murali Vijay (45). Both batsmen fell to McCullum in quick succession, and after captain Suresh Raina was bowled by left-arm pacer Trent Boult, McCullum picked up three wickets in another spell to derail India. Jaydev Shah, the vice-captain, and Yusuf Pathan, who took a fancy to the New Zealand attack during the recent one-day series, were forming a good stand but were cut short by McCullum, who went past his previous best of 5 for 28 when he removed last man Sudeep Tyagi. New Zealand's openers, Aaron Redmond and BJ Watling began positively, in the remaining 12 overs of the day. Watling took a backseat as Redmond hit 31from 41 balls, with four boundaries and a six. _________________________________________________________________ Thankfully they chose Amit Mishra this time. And Dhawan is in the squad. But no Pujara yet again? Instead they've made that Jayadev Shah play! This is ridiculous! If telented batsmen will keep getting overlooked, then obviously we'll give 6 wickets to an ordinary offie!

Seriously, are the Ranji and Deodhar Trophy performances totally moot now? Ie. Where are VRV Singh and Praveen Kumar? ----------- Well said. Jaydev shah averages 28 in FC cricket. LOLL. VICE CAPTAIN! Nepotism i think the word is. Pujara in the squad but not the 11, One of our most talented young bats. Wheres the Karnataka paceman who shared the new ball with Tyagi in the ODs? Forget his name. The guy was top wkt taker last season wasnt he? What kind of message does this send out. And as you say VRV At least Pankaj gets to face the Aussies Guys like Dinda and even Manpreet Gony should not come near the A teams let alone the senior sides unless they have proved themselves in FC cricket- 20/20 is no barometer for how a cricketer can do at a high level

Cricket: New Zealand A still trailing India A Aaron Redmond and James Marshall made half-centuries but India A took a first innings lead over New Zealand A after day two of their four-day match at Chennai on Tuesday More... NZ A trailing Indian counterparts Sep 30, 2008 Aaron Redmond and James Marshall made half-centuries but India A took a first innings lead over New Zealand A after day two of their four-day match at Chennai on Tuesday. Redmond made 51 in a 65-run partnership for the first wicket before BJ Watling was run out for 10. Marshall, who also scored 51, featured in a 90-run partnership with captain Peter Fulton (37) to take the score to 174 for three after 62 overs, within striking distance of the hosts' 248. But India took the upper hand after Fulton and Marshall were dismissed in the space of two overs. Amit Mishra, who ran out Watling, took the wickets of Redmond and Greg Hay before fellow spinner Mohnish Parmar took over. Parmar claimed three wickets and seamer Sudeep Tyagi helped wrap up the tail as New Zealand fell for 230 in 83 overs. Trent Boult struck early in the second innings to dismiss Shikhar Dharwan and leave India on 27 for one at stumps, a lead of 45. Report : India A v New Zealand A, 1st Test, Chennai, 2nd day Bowlers hand advantage to India A Cricinfo staff September 29, 2008 India A 27 for 1 (Kukreja 15*) & 248 lead New Zealand A 230 (Redmond 51, Marshall 51, Parmar 3-57, Dinda 2-44) by 45 runs Scorecard India A seized the advantage in the first Test against New Zealand A after some splendid work by the Indian bowlers. Having bowled out New Zealand for 230, ensuring an 18-run lead, India were 27 for 1 at stumps, having lost the wicket of Shikhar Dhawan. Earlier in the day, the New Zealand openers added hust 29 runs to the overnight score of 36. BJ Watling was the first to go, and Aaron Redmond followed after scoring 51, which consisted of eight fours and a six. A solid 90-run partnership between Peter Fulton and James Marshall for the third wicket looked like putting New Zealand back on track at 179 for 3 before the trio of Ashok Dinda, Mohnish Parmar and Amit Mishra triggered a collapse. And after Sudeep Tyagi removed Brent Arnel and Reece Young in two overs, it was upto Parmar to wrap up the innings by removing last man Trent Boult. Parmar, the offspinner, was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 57 as Dinda, Mishra and Tyagi bagged two wickets apiece. India's openers began cautiously but Boult struck in the sixth over, removing Dhawan who was caught by Redmond.

Raina smashed 146 off 130 balls with ten fours and eight sixes before New Zealand regrouped to trigger a lower-order collapse. In reply, New Zealand lost BJ Watling early and ended the day on a cautious note at 41 for 1. Raina's partnership with M Vijay gave India the initiative as New Zealand failed to get early breakthroughs. The pair added a 83 in just under 15 overs before Vijay fell for 57, caught by Peter Fulton off Aaron Redmond's legbreaks. As Raina continued his assault, most of the middle-order partnerships progressed at more than five runs an over, thereby signaling India's intent to push for a challenging target. Redmond was the most expensive of the lot, leaking more than seven an over in his 12-over spell. Raina's dismissal, caught by James Marshall off Nathan McCullum, had a telling effect on India's progress. Brent Arnel, the right-arm seamer, plugged away at the wickets as India lost their last five wickets for just 18 runs. Arnel was on a hat-trick in the 83rd over of the innings. With the first two deliveries, he got rid of Amit Mishra and Mohnish Parmar and nabbed his third victim, Ashok Dinda, off the last ball of that over. Wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha resisted with 39 before being bowled by Arnel, bringing the innings to a close at 336. Redmond and Watling added 22 before Parmar, the offspinner, trapped Watling for 6 in the 11th over. New Zealand batted out the remaining seven overs and went into the final day needing a further 314 to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
