Ram
About his place in the test team as a keeper-batsman? I guess he cant be dropped now anyway coz he's captain (duh!), but he's definitely played well in this series so far. As always, he may not be topping the run charts, but whenver he scores, they have always been VITAL runs. His runs in this series have come at crucial junctures, just like they did in the first test at Lords against Eng in 2007, the first test at Delhi against Pakistan last year and the 3rd test at Perth against Australia last year. They're were all series defining contributions. If people have doubts still, then we can assume they're just biased. Link to comment
King Tendulkar
He has earnt his place. And is rightly undisputed keeper/batsman. Although his glove work has been scratchy this series. Has he earnt the captaicy? No. Did you see Jumbo against the windies jaw strapped up and charging in to bowl for India and snaring lara! Dhoni would never do that, gets a bit tired will rest himself for major test series. Not committed to playing for India like Kumble and co but yet gets the captaincy He is a lucky git though, so him being captain could mean we win more cos of his luck as captain:--D Link to comment
DomainK
I think he has earned the place as well as the captaincy. He proved himself as a captain when he got the opportunity. Link to comment
Shehezaada
good player no doubt, excellet keeper, but really needs to work on his batting. Generally plays well on flat decks but on seaming tracks he looks in trouble. Did well in Mohali when we needed him too, but on a flat track. One contribution in a series does not remove doubts. His best performance to date is the Lord's test match where he battled superbly. But he looks very awkward against good quality bowling on bowler friendly wickets, and I have a feeling that has to really work on his backfoot game on bouncy tracks. Link to comment

Kumble was a legendary captain, right? :hysterical: Link to comment
Predator_05
Any doubts people may have had over his position in the test side were immediately put to rest during the Sri Lanka series. He is miles better than any other 'keeper batsman in India. Link to comment
vsd2006
Dhonis the future of Indian cricket, may it be his batting or his captaincy, he has proved himself that he has a very sound head on his shoulders and has the maturity to lead. His glove work might be shoddy at times in this series but dont forget that we are playing in India, Haddin has looked worse then Dhoni Link to comment
Mr. Wicket
There was doubt? When? He saved our asses at Lord's. He's chipped in with a few very handy innings down the order elsewhere. He led with aplomb the one time before this series when he was captaining v. South Africa, and did a fantastic job. And he's ALWAYS been stellar in his main role in the side, as a keeper. I'd go as far as to say he's a better keeper than Mongia was. About as good v. spin, and better against quicks and a swinging ball. I can't imagine why anyone doubted him earlier. And if anyone doubts him now, they're fools. Link to comment
Predator_05
Kamran Akmal is way better. Tests:- Would Dhonni get into the Indian team as a specialist keeper? Not in a million years. Would Kami get into ANY test team as a specialist keeper? Damn right he would - arguably the best gloveman in world cricket at the moment. The errors Dhonni makes (by this I mean missed chances/stumpings); byes etc cost India over the course of a match/series/season. Verdict: Kami is untouchable as a keeper in test matches. As batsman, they are different types - with different roles. Kami is a utility player; a versatile batsman that can bat anywhere - and his role in the team with the bat will become far more important when the likes of Inzi are no longer in the team - his batting is evolving, and looking at his record (4 centuries in no time) - expect GREATNESS from him by the time hes retired. Dhonni with the bat is ONLY in the team for his batting - if that fades (and the curse of failed Ind batsman/keepers is world famous), then he is out of the team. ODIs Dhonni - better batsman (cannot argue with his record) BUT still a liability with the gloves, but could get into the ODI team alone on batting. Kami - Again the 'utility' batsman - fulfils a genuine 'team-role' and will bat anywhere 3 ODI tons says it all. Outstanding with the wktkeeping gloves - a different class from Dhonni. Overall Verdict: Kami is going to be regular fixture in this Pak team for a decade and break a shedload of records - Dhonni....ask me in 2 years, because the mnedia made Prativ Patel to be great hope only 2 years ago, and where is he now? He's working at my local Spar! :winky: Link to comment
King
There has not been much talk about the number of drop catches this series. Contrast this with the last series when KKD and Parthiv donned the WK gloves. Primarily Dhoni's job is to keep well which he certainly is good at, he's the best WK in India no doubt. As for batting, he is way ahead of the likes of KKD and Parthiv, his two immediate competitors. India has tried pretty much everyone for captaincy barring Sehwag. The choice is now narrowed between Dhoni and Sehwag. Dhoni commands place in all forms of cricket and rightfully is leading the team. His place or captaincy cannot be contested, he's worked to it. He looked awful in Australia and didn't look good in SA either. With time he'll improve hopefully, but he REALLY needs to sort out his backfoot game and jabbing at the ball. Link to comment
Sachinism
What about Dhoni's tactics today 8-1 field, seemed strange, but he bogged the batsmen down and wickets soon came Link to comment
THX_1138
no... doubts still linger. and will persist till he addresses the following: 1. world hunger. 2. permanent human colony on mars. Link to comment
Holysmoke
Whats interesting is that this is probably the most non-controversial appointment of a new Indian captain since as far as I can remember. Nobody's saying it should be some other player in the team Nobody's saying that the current captain should continue. There are no excuses!(inexperienced, will affect his batting, is aloof, etc) Link to comment
