Srinivasan told journalists that the two boards have agreed to play early February soon after Sri Lanka’s three match ODI series against Pakistan. “I am very happy to be here today and historically, SLC and BCCI have enjoyed excellent relationships and we have further strengthened those relationships and we promise to support Sri Lankan Cricket further,” Srinivasan told journalists. The Sri Lankan board, temporarily run directly by the Sports Ministry announced its full support to the Indian Premier League and along with the bilateral series, a ten year deal with the Indian board was announced at the media briefing. “We agreed to release our cricketers for the IPL tournament for a period of ten years. We are with the Indian board and we take the same stance as the Indian board with regard to the ICL players,” Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge told reporters, effectively overturning the Sri Lankan board’s previous decision to allow ICL players to take part in the Sri Lankan domestic tournament. This means the Sri Lankan board will also accept the ten year bailout package that the Indian Board promised the neighboring country a few months back to the tune of US$ 45 million. Halfway through the negotiations fell off and the visit by the Indian board secretary has effectively sealed the deal between the two boards. “The deal will be inked on the day we play the Twenty-20 match. We have received a firm expression of support as far as the ICL is concerned and we are looking forward to signing the deal,” Srinivasan told journalists. There were also reports that the Indian board was trying to minimize losses incurred by the cancellation of the Pakistan tour by playing Sri Lanka, but Srinivasan explaining things said that the series was only a goodwill gesture and didn’t bring in any revenues for the Indian board. “It’s very clear the home board has the television rights and we are not coming here with the intention of making money. We are coming only to honour the request of the Sri Lankan board,” he added. He also denied certain media reports that India had earlier pulled out from the bailout package due to indifferences with former SLC boss Arjuna Ranatunga. “We are sorry if there’s been any impression created like that,” Srinivasan said. “We didn’t say anything at all on what was going on here. SLC is a sovereign body as much as the BCCI,” Srinivasan added.
