Guest dada_rocks Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 People need to read and comprehend what AB said. His words were - He was commenting on some angry comments on his blog regarding SM. He says that reality portrayed by Indian directors would probably not get the sort of international recognition that Boyle has gotten. Nowhere has he slammed SM. Problem is in BW, filled with illiterate to semi-literate, Amitabh bachchan is a total misfit.. He comes of as an intellectual.. so often his line of thought is beyond the comprehension of bollywood idiots anyway .. distribution of literacy among BB followres is not muh different wither.. BTW amitabh bachan even hates this term bollowood .. in his views it diminshes the indian movie industry.. I am sure semi-literates won't get even this line of thinking of his..

kumble_rocks Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Great Movie , loved it ... AB is miffed that he wasn't cast, that's all E.O.S .....
Willow_on_fire Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 have to watch the movie yet....but there is no surprise that the western world / especially media has been always happy to promote movies of Indian living in slums....most whites are brain-washed by the white media...stupid ****s. infact...Indian slum dwellers are better than western welfare parasites...who get $600/month off tax payer's money for doing nothing and yet they fricken beg for money...bunch of lowlife scums. corruption & over-population is holding back India's rapid progress.
graphic23 Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Ok, again, he never said the movie was bad - he never "slammed" it. He was starting a debate on the topic of whether it is perfectly fine for a westerner to show slums in India or not. He said it is there in all countries.

Gambit Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 big b is just spewing he didn't get to play prem [quiz show host] you ever see chris tarrant looking like that? a homeless hobo? Great Movie ' date=' loved it ... AB is miffed that he wasn't cast, that's all E.O.S .....[/quote'] The world in Mr.Bitter Bachchan's head probably is slum free. The man needs to come out with such stuff to get people to read his stupid blog. Will all of you please read post #94!
sandtest Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 I will never have any problem with any movie which shows Indians and Hindus as evil rioting lots. Even their depiction of blue bodied Shri Ram as a symbol during riots will be acceptable -- PROVIDED apply this p-sec standard to ALL. Last I heard, Satanic Verses was banned in India. Forget Salman Rushdie, recently Taslima Nasrin was attacked in broad daylight, in front of policemen and entire press. Indian Kaangress government went one step further and asked her to leave country, still refusing asylum to Nasrin beacuse she depicted atrocities of Bangladeshi Hindus in the name of religion of Islam and it's teaching? Where all secularism of India gone now?? Is it only limited till bashing Hindus and Hinduism??...come Islam and how come we become soooo sensitive to secularism. :giggle:

EnterTheVoid Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Will all of you please read post #94! he doesn't need to explicitly state: I HATE IT!!! I HATE IT!!! That quote is very cleverly worded. how refreshing is it to finally see a movie thats honest and upfront about life's realities? i rather watch SM than watch some crummy Bollywood film thats shot in Switzerland/ UK and they pretend its like India For goodness sake, Big B, slums are a part of life, especially in Mumbai, where if I am not mistaken, theres a big slum called "Dharavi" situated right in the middle of the city. Get over yourself and give credit where its due

He wanted to start a debate on whether the depiction of reality is indeed against India or not. If you don't want to engage in the debate, then don't. He clarified by saying that none of the previous statements were his words and he merely wanted to start a discussion. OMG. So much of <> influence. Everyone complaining for absolutely nothing.

But it is reality; the reason this movie touched a raw nerve is because I've seen it with my own eyes when I went to India. I am sorry, but no amount of lip service or media spin portraying india as some alice in wonderland type fantasy will never work haven't you seen the slums ? haven't you seen the beggars Oh for goodness sake, for all the money / wealth / etc mumbai has, parts of it are extremely backward and poor whats with the parts in red? you trying to provoke a fight? well, if thats the case, count me out
graphic23 Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Er. Wasn't instigating anything. Was just claiming that your anger at AB was just misjudged.
sandtest Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 he doesn't need to explicitly state: I HATE IT!!! I HATE IT!!! For goodness sake, Big B, slums are a part of life, especially in Mumbai, where if I am not mistaken, theres a big slum called "Dharavi" situated right in the middle of the city. Get over yourself and give credit where its due That all sounds good and moralist. But how depicting poverty of India for sole purpose of SELLING it in international film market is going to solve this problem. For me, it's nothing but Poverty PORNOGRAPHY....You make money by selling Poverty of India. Wait, Slumdog is not alone, there are many in past like Arundhatti Roys who have sold India's poverty to highest bidder and received prize money in Booker. recetly another Arvind Adiga guy joined the bandwagon of Poverty sellers. Still Indians will not mind if you are trying to sell India's poverty in the name of depiction of truth, what makes it more disgusting is when they try to give it a religious twist by protraying that Evil Hindus always do rioting against poor Muslims....to add further twist with a Blue Body dressed boy posing as Shri Ram in middle of Riots! can you tell me one single movie where, Islamic prophet or Evangelical God has been depicted like this without getting banned.?? Find answer to this question first and then we will talk about portrayal of truth!
Guest dada_rocks Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 read whole piece then judge ab and please don't talk about illiterate bw actors in this debate .. if u must then talk about riter community of bw.. i find it insulting to ab's intellect when people compare ab the writer intellectual with illiterate song and dance actors with stunted development of their brain ******************************************8 If Slumdog Millionaire projects India as a Third World ‘dirty underbelly’ developing nation and causes pain and disgust among nationalists and patriots, let it be known that a murky underbelly exists and thrives even in the most developed nations. It’s just that the Slumdog idea authored by an Indian and conceived and cinematically put together by a Westerner gets global recognition. The other would perhaps not. The commercial escapist world of Indian cinema had vociferously battled for years the attention paid and the adulation given to the legendary Satyajit Ray at all the prestigious film festivals of the West, and not a word of appreciation [was given to] the entertaining mass-oriented box-office blockbusters that were being churned out from Mumbai. The argument: Ray portrayed reality; the other: escapism, fantasy and incredulous posturing. Unimpressive for Cannes and Berlin and Venice. But look how rapidly all that is changing. Retrospectives in Paris and New York. Dedicated TV channels running Hindi cinema on prime time. Premieres at Leiscester Square, the home of all Hollywood royalty, thronged by hundreds on the street in cold, biting weather. Affable recognition at most corners of the universe… And a dear friend from Los Angeles wires in that Hollywood is abuzz with India and the phenomenal talent that exists there. We’re talking cinema still! (This is an edited extract from Amitabh Bachchan’s blog, http://bigb.bigadda.com)
EnterTheVoid Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Ok. of all the rubbish that's been written on this thread, this is one of the few posts I feel compelled to reply to Thanks sandtest for being a gentlemen But how depicting poverty of India for sole purpose of SELLING it in international film market is going to solve this problem. It doesn't -> Its movie aimed at pulling the heart strings, an aim that it executed brilliantly because it almost left me in tears after watching all the slum / begging / child exploitation scenes in the first half of movie Still Indians will not mind if you are trying to sell India's poverty in the name of depiction of truth, what makes it more disgusting is when they try to give it a religious twist by protraying that Evil Hindus always do rioting against poor Muslims....to add further twist with a Blue Body dressed boy posing as Shri Ram in middle of Riots! Theres no such thing as evil hindus and poor muslims. Putting religion aside, anyone who kills others and uses religion as a justification should be shot; please dont sell the rubbish that muslims are innocent -> I am trying to keep my heartbeat in check after reading the last few posts regarding this very matter in the thread titled "96 wc qf", opened by gambit can you tell me one single movie where, Islamic prophet or Evangelical God has been depicted like this without getting banned.?? Find answer this and then we will talk about protrayal of truth! Obviously, no one is balls enough to do that. If you mention allah but dont praise him in your posts, then you are effectively a kaffir (non believer) and some mullah with the IQ equivalent to a clump of dirt will instigate a jihad not only on the instigator, if there was one in the first place, but the whole community the poor chap comes on dont bother waiting for a reply. i gotta study for an exam and this f****** site is proving extremely addictive but by all means, please leave your thoughts. I will have a look at them when I come back
