Gambit Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 It's economy is apparently in freefall. And it doesn't even have Oil to fall back on. Lag gayi duniya ki largest construction site ki.
Rajiv Posted February 16, 2009 Author Posted February 16, 2009 Almost half of my school batch mates have business there - they said its hell at the moment. Whoever made it in 70's 80's are stable out there with close connections to the arabs but afterall, its an arab country, their mood can change anytime and just stamp a new law
THX_1138 Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 my mate from high school has been working there for over two years and is about to get hitched in a month. i fear for him!
THX_1138 Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 to be honest i am not shedding a single tear for these frackers. they built an entire economy on the backs of oppressed, foreign laborers. about time their glass houses came crashing down.
graphic23 Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 my mate from high school has been working there for over two years and is about to get hitched in a month. i fear for him! Thats unfortunate. With regards to the point raised about foreign laborers, isn't that astonishing? I've read several things (granted not all things can be trusted) about the poor state of the laborers in Dubai and yet we can find SO many of them struggling there.
SachDan Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 It's economy is apparently in freefall. And it doesn't even have Oil to fall back on. Lag gayi duniya ki largest construction site ki.[/ to be honest i am not shedding a single tear for these frackers. they built an entire economy on the backs of oppressed' date=' foreign laborers. [b']about time their glass houses came crashing down. :((:((:(( Dubai is in shambles ! only those work here or having a business will know the magnitude of impact. No one is safe atm. Even Dubai's sisiter/brother Abu Dhabi is bullying! Dubai Mall, largest shopping mall in the world is with Abu Dhabi. If media reports are to be believed, they have demanded JFZ, terminal-3 (latest airport in Dubai) and Fly Emirates(biggest Air Line in GCC) under their custody to bail out Dubai from this pathetic situation. On an average, number of Malayees (who are among the most number of expatriates in Dubai) fleeing is between 15-20 daily !! construction has come to a halt. Except for some local banks, all other banks have stopped lending, down sizing employees reached that stage where even the top officers can't breath easily. Govt. has come in open and said they are not responsible for terminations except for Emiratis. If any company terminates the services of an Emirati ( whose sole work is to boast or smoke), Govt. may sauspend that company from future operations in UAE or impose a fine of astronomical figures !!
fineleg Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 ^ so, citizens have "job protection" - regardless of skill or contribution?
Mr. Wicket Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Yup. Happens a lot in the middle east. Heard of Saudi-ization, fl?
Rajiv Posted February 17, 2009 Author Posted February 17, 2009 LOL, you are talking abt Middle East here - they are the only citizens and they have all the protection, albeit the ones looking to scam the govt. Somewhat similar what happened to my relatives in late 70s and early 80, they had great jobs at Toyota and suddenly they decided to cut their salary into half, if it wasn' for their investments in Bombay...
SachDan Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 ^ so' date=' citizens have "job protection" - regardless of skill or contribution?[/quote'] Yup :(( Indians can't exist here it seems. Even Sania Mirza with all her skills couldn't go past 2nd round and I am feeling bad after spending 100 Dhs (2 tickets) to watch her play, where one should have saved it actually !
fineleg Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Yup. Happens a lot in the middle east. Heard of Saudi-ization, fl? No, I have heard of hardliners in Saudi etc. But did not know abt this job protectionism. LOL, you are talking abt Middle East here - they are the only citizens and they have all the protection, albeit the ones looking to scam the govt. Somewhat similar what happened to my relatives in late 70s and early 80, they had great jobs at Toyota and suddenly they decided to cut their salary into half, if it wasn' for their investments in Bombay... Wow! Sounds scary.
THX_1138 Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 My dad and i spoke at length about this... and this is what he had to say... mind you my father and i speak once a few months and his words are very measured, and pregnant with meaning and wisdom, so i offer them to everyone here: "We have drifted from the true applications of science and technology. Stimulating the artificial interest markets with the brightest talents, the tall skyscrapers have been built at the expense of scientists and engineers who became financial wizards. It is about time that the balance is regressed: scientists returned to doing what they ought to have been working on all this while, putting chimpanzees in space."

The Outsider Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 only couple of weeks ago some posters @ ICF were defending dubai and its laws :giggle: Who was defending the laws of Dubai? The discussion was supposed to be about the ground realities in Dubai and a comparison with many other countries not officially under Shariah.
suraj Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Who was defending the laws of Dubai? The discussion was supposed to be about the ground realities in Dubai and a comparison with many other countries not officially under Shariah. Yes I don't see the correlation between the two discussions at all.
THX_1138 Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Who was defending the laws of Dubai? The discussion was supposed to be about the ground realities in Dubai and a comparison with many other countries not officially under Shariah. yeah i just read that entire thread. its a relative comparison to the other middle eastern states with shariah. the audacity and dishonesty that it takes to transform that discussion into an accusation that posters were defending the laws of dubai is incredible. i guess the lot of DR, BB etc have a new recruit...
