King
Seriously it is stupid to accord cricketers, rock stars, footballers this kind of treatment. They are way above the rest for sure given their ability but it's not like they are finding cure for cancer or AIDS and saving lives in millions. In fact the ones that do great service to mankind is usually not hailed as big as this. You need media to make these players bigger than life and the media are never short of this. There has been a new article on Cricinfo from Sriram Veera on Mendis. It seems Sriram Veera visited Mendis' house and while having a chat with Mendis' family members Mendis dropped by and was surprised to see the writer at his place. Mendis it seems was in a hurry and left without having spoken to the writer much about cricket. Guess what? The writer went on to write about Mendis, his mother, his dad, his sister, his brother and I'm glad he didn't write about Mendis' neighbour's dog. Generally the media is a bit of a nut case. They just can't think straight.Unfortunately media wields the kind of power no other industry does. Link to comment

Nicely written post :hatsoff: You are right - they are great players, no doubt, but media whips up the frenzy like anything, and then fans imbibe these things and whip up the frenzy several notches higher, and the cycle repeats. flamy
I don't see anything wrong in people worshiping him. :dontknow: And people who do public service just do not provide the titilation as a mainstream celebrity. Celebrity and adulation is as old as prostitution and will continue on. Link to comment
