Online Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 hm.. I did see a live performance of the breathless song... Question: Namaskaarams! Welcome to Rediff Chat. I wanted to ask you a question regarding the 'Breathless' song. Was it spliced together to give us an illusion of being sung in one breath? In fact I am reminded of a song by SPB sung in Tamizh that did the same thing, but in that case he DID actually sing the whole thing in one breath (meaning the whole stanza -- not the whole song). Did that inspire you to do this one? (Please do not misconstrue my question. I absolutely LOVED the 'Breathless' song) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shankar Mahadevan (Tue Jul 6 1999 6:38 IST) Indian: First of all I am a human being so it's impossible to hold my breath for three minutes or else I would have been a dead man :) The song is a concept song and we have executed it perfectly. For your information, SPB has also not sung that entire para in one breath which he admitted openly. And NO, I was not influenced by that song.
riya Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 ARR fans will put him as the greatest of all.As lurker said he wouldn't be in my top 5 musicians of all time .Again it is all about personal like and dislike. He is a modern day great, a revloutionist .I love his music too.But should i hear those over again and again after 10 years.Probably not.

Don Sharma Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 There is one song from the Malayalam film Olangal (I think) which is really messmerising. This is the song that I was referring to. All those who love melody for whom language isnt a barrier wud like this as well. The sound quality of the video isnt great but the song itself is a masterpiece from Ilayaraja. l1lBbkWx0Dk The tune was later used in a Telugu film and also in a Tamil film(Auto Raja).
kumble_rocks Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 Interestingly sonu nigam considers Shanker Mahadevan as the best composer/singer of India -- http://www.hindustantimes.com/StoryPage/StoryPage.aspx?sectionName=HomePage&id=00c72c2e-5b00-4593-8a47-ff35a4d52567&Headline=%27Shankar+Mahadevan+is+the+best+Indian+composer+today%27 Despite the hype about music maestro A.R. Rahman's Golden Globe win and Oscar nominations, singer Sonu Nigam says 'Shankar Mahadevan of the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy trio is the best Indian composer today. "Today the best composer, who sings equally well, is Shankar Mahadevan - his compositions are as beautiful as his singing is," Sonu said on Zee News' celebrity chat show Kahiye Janab, being aired Saturday. Sonu admits that most people would say Rahman is the best composer and he too appreciates the maestro's music. "Normally, everyone will say A.R. Rahman is the best. The most remarkable thing about him is that he never overdoes things. His voice is sufiana and he never tries to go beyond that. That is the best part about his style. I would say that the composers who sing well should sing themselves, like some of them do," opined Sonu. According to the singer, who has lent vocals to hit songs like Yeh dil deewana and Sandese aate hain, music composers use extremely high scales in songs nowadays. "These days the composers use such high scales; they won't compose low pitched music. Recently I recorded a song 'Do baat pakki' that was so high pitched that it made me go to my highest scale," he said. Sonu, whose short acting career in Bollywood was marked by flops like Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani, Kaash Aap Hamare Hote and Love In Nepal, says an actor can hardly be a singer. "A singer is a person who sings on stage. In a recording studio, technology can turn a read verse into sung lines. For example, Farhan Akhtar has sung many songs, but I bet even he does not consider himself a singer. Singers are Salamat Ali Khan, Ameer Khan, Ghulam Ali or Mehdi Hassan. In my view even I am not a singer, maybe in the view of others I am," Sonu said.
Kohum Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 As a singer - I think Shankar Mahadevan is much better than ARR. As a composer, ARR is ahead of Shankar. But that's because he has been composing for more time than SEL and in three different languages. I have heard Shankar Mahadevan sing in songs of Stalwarts in Marathi, in his own style & be able to capture the audience. On a side note, I also think Little Master is a comparable musician, in that he makes everyone, including opposition, dance to his tunes. :sachin: But I digress.
graphic23 Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 I'm sorry nandya, but I disagree with your reasoning as to why Rahman's the better composer. Its not because he's been composing for a longer time; its that he is very aware of the worldly sounds and earthly sounds. At least 9/10 times, he can precisely come up with the sound/noise that suits a situation or an emotion. His knowledge of the various types of music and particular mastery of Indian and to a certain extent, Western classical music helps him a great lot that the other composers just don't have. His variety in instrumentation is far far different. I am quite confident that 10-15 years down the lane, SEL (with no discredit to them) will not have achieved the variety in music that we hear from Rahman today. I can easily recognize the decade of a particular song if it was made by say a Anu Malik or now, even SEL. But Rahman's tunes are generally time-less - i.e. he doesn't follow a particular formula or pattern to compose the music, and to be quite honest, there are only few musicians in India that fall in that category - RD/SD Burman, Ilayaraja, MS Viswanathan, and KV Mahadevan, etc. But what makes Rahman even more special, IMO, is the quality of the instrumentation.
Cricketics Posted February 4, 2010 Author Posted February 4, 2010 Time to bump this thread for those who believe Shankar Mahadevan is as good as Rahmann. I beleive he is actually better then Rahman. Shankar Fans. Joint the club.
ludhianvi Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 When I listen to song, I just listen to the song without really fussing too much over the composer or singer. If the song clicks with me, I like it no matter who the singer or the composer is. Perhaps you can call me as ignorant but that's just me. This song is great: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zciOVqRsqxk]YouTube- Manna Dey - Kasme Vaade Pyaar Wafa - Upkar [1967][/ame]

This song is great: Not sure if you have seen the movie, if you have then you would probably like it more. Manoj Kumar asks Pran why he sings the song and his response is great. The singer of course is Manna Dey, compose Kalyanji Anandji.
achilles Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Shankar-Ehsan-Loy have a fair distance to go before catching up with ARR
rahulrulezz Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 TBH I find Shankars voice kinda annoying... ..He is overdoing it like Himesh Reshammiya... His voice is too old for lead actors .lol look at his rock songs in London Dreams..He RUINED it!!!..or Tere Naina from Chandni chowk..He sounded like an Uncle in front of Shreya...and I hated his voice in Jhoom Barabar Jhoom... Also I dont like the fact that composers are singing thier own songs as well... You gotta feel for those singers from different shows..Personally I find Rehman's voice more soulful than Shankar and regarding Rehman as a composer, I dont think ANY Indian composer can even touch his feets when it comes to composition and music!!! I can listen to Swades, Rang De Basanti, Jaane Tu Yaa Jane Na, Delhi 6 songs all my life.. but as Lurker said, its upto an individual and I personally find ARR compositions soulful and awesome!!
patriot Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 you JOKING me!!! Shankar Mahadevan's BAAP cant sing Vande Matram, Yeh jo Des hai Tera, Lukka Chupiii with the way Rahman sung..All these 3 songs bring Goosegumps everytime i hear ..love these songs YouTube - Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera - Swades | Translation in Description YouTube - Lukka Chuppi Though AR Rahman is a famous composer, he is the most underrated singer..here are the some of the gems of his songs sung by him YouTube - Khwaja Mere Khawaja-Jodhaa Akbar And AR Rahman's baap can't sing Taare Zameen Par, Maa, Bumro (Mission Kashmir) , Lakshya title song...and many more. Have you heard Shankar's Hanuman Chalisa ? IMO Shankar is India's best male singer today.
graphic23 Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 You know its really hilarious how you guys bring in "all time India's best", and completely forget about half of India! Best singer in India, best musician in India, best actor in India, etc. and not a single consideration given to the other half. Life doesn't begin and end in Bombay in India. Shankar Mahadevan isn't half the singer that someone like Yesudas is, or for that matter, SP Balu is. And both of them have sung in several regional languages (not just Hindi from the north, mind you). Forgetting about this whole regional ignorance for a minute, when you term someone the best singer or best musician, and forget the entire genres of classical (hindustani and carnatic), and folk music, it comes off as a bit stupid (no offense meant towards anyone). Coming to music, yeah, ARR is one of the good ones out there - but certainly not the best. And as a huge fan of Rahman's music (I practically own 99% of all his popular albums, and if you dont forget to count the innumerable music compositions he's done for a lot of small films, then I own those too :P ) - I still think that his music lacks soul lately because more work is done through technology than instruments. Calling him the best musician to come out of India is extreme hyperbole and it is showing an incredible amount of ignorance. [/rant] As an example and to prove that I'm not making stuff up - a couple of years back, Shankar Mahadevan sang a song for a telugu film in the raga, Ananda Bhairavi, and its a pathos song. Though he sang well, if anyone listened to Balamuralikrishna's rendering of the same song (even without the swaras in between), it just blows off this one. Its not that he's a bad singer, but everyone has their limitations, and we've got to be careful not to sound stupid when we make absolutist judgments like "best male singer in India today."
yoda Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 SM singing an ARR composition. SM won a National award for this I believe. It is in Tamil. 95wHqKPh49g
Aqua Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 ^ it's abt 10 yrs old and it's one of the best songs of ARR's.. note how the music is so sweetly using the traditional instruments.. love it.. :) these guys shd work together more often... and the biggest joke is how these ppl aren't actually competing against each other, but the fans are.. Lurker Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 You know its really hilarious how you guys bring in "all time India's best"' date=' and completely forget about half of India! Best singer in India, best musician in India, best actor in India, etc. and not a single consideration given to the other half. [b']Life doesn't begin and end in Bombay in India. Very true. However it is no different than say Hollywood in that regard. Surely the world movie industry does not begin and end there, in fact there are some great movies coming out of France, Spain, Latin America and even countries like Iran. Still when you think of movies you do think of Hollywood first. This is no different in India as well. This will take me back to the whole rant of a common Indian language. The best way of an average Indian to learn about fellow Indian artists has to be through a common language. It is simply impossible to think a Bihari would appreciate Yesudas when he has not even heard of him. If English is pushed as the common language across India, which it is by most non-Hindi speaking states, there is going to be a fallout where a Hindi speaker would know more about Will Smith than he does about Shivaji Ganeshan. And really can you argue against that? Shankar Mahadevan isn't half the singer that someone like Yesudas is, or for that matter, SP Balu is. And both of them have sung in several regional languages (not just Hindi from the north, mind you). Forgetting about this whole regional ignorance for a minute, when you term someone the best singer or best musician, and forget the entire genres of classical (hindustani and carnatic), and folk music, it comes off as a bit stupid (no offense meant towards anyone). I am not sure if any music afficiando would ever put Yesudas and Shankar Mahadevan in the same sentence. Personal taste etc is perfectly fine and all that but Yesudas is divine while Shankar, great artists as he is, is a mere mortal in comparison. Many of my favorite songs of late 70s and early to mid 80s are those of Yesudas. Brilliant singer. It is mine, and many Indians like me, misfortune that I could not follow him lot more because of the language difference. xxx
Online Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 He sucks, I hate his voice, I hate every song that he sings I'm fine with him composing music but FFS do not sing
