How can you prevent terrorists from targeting cricket?

Let's hear some of your ideas : My one is air travel to the ground for players and officials. No chance for the terrorists to strike in the air and also helps the common men to use the streets like it should be rather than being told the streets are blocked out because a few cricketers are passing by. The ground is big enough for a copter to land but the only other logistic here is that the hotel must be equipped with a helipad. Given air travel doesn't take too much time the players can also be hosted outside the city in some good resorts or farms with good security. These days (read Merriot hotel incidence) people can gate crash a massive hotel without even having to plant a bomb inside the vicinity. They can get hold of heavy explosives and cause destruction from a distance. Obviously you can't fool proof every street in the city. Hosting of players outside the city is a much safer option and also gives the playes a bit of room or independence. For every terrorist attempt and a killing of an innocent citizen take out 100-500 terrorists. I'm sure the public sympathy will help the cops to take action rather than wait for parliments passing bills to give them more powers to take on the terrorists. Maybe the cricket grounds around the world should also start looking at constructing an inhouse hotel in the Stadiums. It won't cost much to convert a section of the stadium to residence. All they need is about 30-40 rooms. I'm sure most stadiums will have some extra unused space that can be converted to residence for the players. From the ground the players can be transported to the airport and vice versa. In short out smart the terrorists and do something about the situation rather than just keep worrying about it. This isn't the first time the terrorists have struck and won't be the last time either. I think the cricket boards around the world has to be pro-active and much smarter. It won't be bad to have a mandatory post for security advisor in every local cricket board that has local knowledge. Any more ideas to thrawt the terrorists plots in future?

Some of these measure, I feel, will become a must rather than good- to- haves in the recent future.

A more through background check by a third party of the staff employed for players. Not something like this: Mehar Mohammed Khalil, the bus driver whose smart thinking and rapid reaction saved the lives of Sri Lankan cricketers on Tuesday, is the brother of a mujahideen fighter killed by the Indian army in Kashmir in 1995, reports The Times, London. And back home, Khalil himself is a supporter of the Jamaat-e-Islami, a legal Islamist political party that wants to impose sharia across Pakistan. He also believes that the 03/03 attackers were Indians. Khalil's story hardly detracts his act of courage. But it does typify the curious contradictions that exist in Pakistan society. The 38-year-old Khalil lives with his parents and brothers in a small house built by his grandfather in Lahore's overcrowded Yateem Khana district. As he spoke to the reporter, a relative whisked away a photograph of his dead brother, Shakil, "with a Kalashnikov rifle over his shoulder, a camouflage cap on his head and a radio in one hand", The Times reported. "Printed in Urdu across the photograph were the words: Mujahid martyred in Kashmir. Died in Udhampur, India, 25 August 1995. Codename: Abdullah." Newspaper records show that on August 24, 1995, a terrorist codenamed Abdullah, owing allegiance to the Harkat-ul-Ansar, was indeed killed during an attack on an army camp in Bandipore. But Bandipore is in Kashmir whereas Udhampur (mentioned in the photograph, is in Jammu. In between posing for photographs with the Sri Lankan team shirt given by the grateful players, the staunch Jamaat supporter told The Times, "this attack would never have happened under Jamaat". The bus driver works for New Diamond travel agency and earns 15,000 Pakistani rupees per month. Father of two sons and two daughters, Khalil was rewarded with Rs 5 lakh for his heroic action. Like most Pakistanis, he was unwilling to consider the possibility that the attackers were homegrown. He seemed convinced that they were from India. "Their complexions were Indian-type," he said authoritatively. "They were definitely not Pakistani. Foreign forces are involved in this."

how do you propose we do that? I mean, we can't go barging into Terroristan and start bombing away at their terrorist camps, as much as I would want our gov. to.

I seriously hope our intelligence division has plans to catch terrorist alive this time by setting some devious traps. There is no doubt that they will attempt to attack during the IPL....it's such a sweet, juicy target for these mofos. As much as I would not want to risk any innocent lives, but this is our best opportunity to catch them alive. We know they're gonna come, it's just that are we good enough to catch them before they strike?

Cricket can't afford to protect itself without IPL's riches, Ravi. The Pakistani attack has raised cricket's profile, and several prominent sides are rich pickings for aspiring killers, looking to reserve their place in history. Once fear permeates sport, you can never banish it. To gain an idea of the scale of expenses and effort required to protect a major sporting event, have a read of these excerpts from an issue of "Sport in Society" in July 2008.

Changes to security were clearly evident at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games. As part of the associated strategy, airport security was increased, airspace restricted and vehicles were prohibited within 300 feet of venues and other selected buildings. The Organising Committee acquired anti-anthrax tablets and the Utah State Government commissioned the design and implementation of health monitoring systems to detect and manage possible incidents of bio-terrorism. Biometric scanners were used to identify accredited officials and athletes. In total, there were 60 different federal, state and local agencies, and over 15,000 people, including 10,000 national guardsmen, involved in Games related security operations. It is estimated that the September 11 attacks resulted in an additional million spending on Games’ security, bringing the total security budget to around million, more than double that of the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics.
The organizers of the 2002 Football World Cup implemented similarly exacting antiterrorism measures. In addition to Korean and Japanese security agencies, the United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation and Britain’s MI5 and MI6, were also involved in preparations. During the event, fighter jets patrolled no-fly zones around the stadiums and surface-to-air missiles were positioned to shoot down any suspicious aircraft. Sharpshooters were in place at all venues and, as well as the normal security personnel, undercover operatives, some trained by Mossad and assisted by Israeli Army specialists, were on the lookout for suicide bombers. No major terrorist incidents were reported at either the 2002 Olympics or the World Cup.
At (Athens) Games time the security force included tens of thousands of trained personnel, fighter jets and airborne surveillance. Its arsenal included Patriot, Stinger and Hawk missiles. There was naval and port security. Moreover, the Greeks also received assistance from the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). Athens 2004 turned out to be the most guarded Olympic Games in history and the ‘biggest – most expensive – peace time security operation ever’

Pakistani matches may be hosted in Britain. Good idea? Possibly. Pakistan have a large fan following here. However, a recent press release from the home office revealed that 70% of terrorist plots directed towards UK targets are hatched in Pakistan.
