THX_1138 Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Some books cost in the upwards of 70, 80, 90 dollars. You can't exactly download an ebook and print all the pages. I see it as a way of evening things about. Somethings I defintely have to fork out 100 bucks for, whilst others that cost $100 that are available for free, even if it is illegal, I will use them for free most publishers now offer discounts on the textbooks by permitting you limited license for a certain fragment of the book... for instance, ichapters lets you download a 1 year subscription to a single chapter of a book for a fraction of the cost of the whole book. furthermore, most libraries stock most textbooks, and you are permitted to photocopy upto 15% of any copyright protected publication without it being labeled as piracy. the problem with piracy is that it is a matter of attitude... i have numerous collegues who are fresh off the boat from india, and somehow, those who do not possess any moral scruples with regards to piracy are incidentally the very individuals who lack any scruples with regards to academic dishonestly, and plagiarism.
EnterTheVoid Posted May 11, 2009 Author Posted May 11, 2009 I definitely got spooked when I saw the warning letter I download because it's cheap, convenient etc. I know its wrong, but whatever.
THX_1138 Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I definitely got spooked when I saw the warning letter I download because it's cheap, convenient etc. I know its wrong, but whatever. well the first step towards fixing a crime is admitting guilt... next would be prevention, and finally, if needed... retribution. glad to see that you are at step 1... though defiant and arrogant.

ViruRulez Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 they went after the pirate bay managers in socialist sweden... you think germany would be a safe haven? the only supposed safe haven is indonesia' date=' vietnam, and parts of south asia.[/quote'] its not about the country only ..rapidshare has not got clearly mentioned in its terms of service that copyrighted files are not allowed on its server .. TPB does not have any such terms and so there is a stronger legal case against them.. BTW final verdict has not been given yet on the TPB owners and I am sure that they will get away in the long run saying that the files are not hosted on their server
cybervickey Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 you know when someone uses the following phrases "everyone knows..." or "everyone does..." or "everyone is...", for some reason i have this image from a christian amanpore documentary on pakistan, of a young late teens lad in the narrow streets of peshawar, vehemently decrying american presence in the region and when quizzed on the connection of al queda with the region and 9/11, he would respond with "everyone knows that 9/11 was a zionist consipracy"... grow up mate, you steal because you find it convenient... you steal because you are cheap. i steal because i cant afford it, and my needs exceed my means... but i am a poor graduate student and i have curbed my kleptomania by capping my desires, and purchasing discounted software... what's your excuse? how can i get a discounted copy of windows vista 64 bit from my campus and ms office 07 ?
Lurker Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Piracy is like a religion which says you break the rules if you consumed alcohol, ie., in this case you broke the rule when you watched an illegal clip.IN ether case, you can ask for forgiveness if you didn't know what you were doing - in this case the priest for religion, similarly a warning from the ISP which is the normal practice Rajeev, Dont you think we are indulging in hyperbole when we compare piracy to murder and religion? I mean people can kill, and die, for religion, even the staunchest "piracy well-wisher" is not gonna stand up for anything remotely like that. Lets keep this simple. Piracy is illegal, we all know it. Some of us indulge in it from time to time. Like most of car drivers who may have jumped red light at 11 pm when no-one was looking. But there has to be a distinction between a guy who jumps light at 11 pm on a Sunday night and another who keeps doing the same ad-nauseum and then take time to explain other drivers how to beat the signal at X cross section etc etc. xxx

I fully concur with that. The student problems of expensive books is nothing new (sorry Sree). Every generation faces the same problems. During my college days we would Xerox the books, or borrow books from friends. In my case I would have one of my dear SC/ST friends borrow books (they were allowed to borrow 15 at a time while General "candidate" could borrow 3) which would now probably take me on a anti-reservation rant so I would stop there. Plus of course most of the publishers today are co-operative with students. Still all things considered I would give the students the benefit of the doubt because an average student does face the problem of money. However what happens when the student graduates? Does he stop his downloading activities? If he does then the problem would be limited to college campuses only, is it not? Chances are that he does not stop and this has essentially become a part of his life. So yes this is about attitude. xxx
Sachinism Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I support Piracy. I don't see why I should pay 10pounds a week to see a piece of **** movie. I can download a movie and watch it, if I happen to like it, chances are I will buy it on DVD. I probably have about 400 original DVDs. So they are getting my money, I also go to the cinema quite often. But I don't think its fair for me to pay to watch every movie, most of which are rubbish. Anyways to protect yourself, get peerguardian2, if you are using torrents, only use private trackers. Encrypt your hard drive and the torrents you download.
EnterTheVoid Posted May 26, 2009 Author Posted May 26, 2009 I prayed to god for movie tickets. I found out he didn't work that way. I stole the movie and prayed for his forgiveness
THX_1138 Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 how can i get a discounted copy of windows vista 64 bit from my campus and ms office 07 ? if you attend a public university, you might have an IT shop where student licenses are sold. usually you can purchase an authentic student license for windows vista for about $30 odd, and a office 2007 premier edition for about $40 odd. you are permitted to retain these licenses after graduation.
THX_1138 Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 It would be fun to watch these very individuals who current engage in rampant plagiarism and copyright infringement when the day arrives when the skills these individuals bring to the work place or services they render are available over the internet through the very torrents they feast upon today. If you must steal, do so, but dont try to supplement us with shyte excuses and justifications. you steal... you lie, and you are pathetic. deal with it. you are saving $10 bucks on that shyte movie ticket aren't you?
maggot_brain Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 demonoid is best... but very exclusive... i had to wait forever to get an account. Demonoid exclusive? You're joking right? Try getting an invite to waffles.fm or hdbits. I've got an account on demonoid if someone wants an invite PM me your email address. Demonoid is crap anyway. If you want to avoid getting caught downloading stuff you need to get a Usenet account with SSL from Astraweb. It's impossible to see what your downloading because the connection is encrypted and you don't have to share. Anyway for music you should try and get in to what.cd, for films passthepopcorn for Desi stuff Bwtorrents. Don't bother with Desitorrents you have to pay to download there now. It's a joke.
THX_1138 Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 ^ I thought THX was against piracy :hmmmm2: I am. i dont steal music or movies, but i am not above pirated text books since my typical books cost about 100 or above and my budget just does not permit that. Though, Wiley and Sons are brilliant on this front and have on several occassions sold me a copy of their textbooks in pdf format for a serious discount. i do however, download radio dramatizations, that are well... classified in the fuzzy zone of the piracy laws.

It's not 'stealing', this is the propaganda that copyright owners would have you believe. It's copyright infringement, ie making unauthorised copies. If you have a CD and I take it, you no longer have it - I have stolen it. If I make a copy of your CD without keeping yours then I have infringed on the copyright of that CD. We both now have a copy of the CD.

What i meant to state was that I do not infringe on the copyrights of most musical composition or motion pictures. I do however download radio dramatizations that must be recorded using special software. In most cases, such dramatizations cannot be classified as copyright infringement either since some shows such as the early episodes of 'Just a Minute', 'I haven't a clue' and just about all of 'journey into space' is classified as old time radio and since it has been such a long time since the first episodes were premiered, they are no longer considered copyright protected.
