A friend of mine got caught by his/her Internet Service Provider for Internet Piracy

'X' downloaded a software program through the torrent network A company specializing in Internet Fraud tracked the torrent file and his IP address by the means of "time stamp" and informed it to the Internet Service Provider The ISP sent a legally binding notice, which I saw with my own eyes, which stated that if 'X' doesn't comply by immediately cease downloading of any future files from that particular software company, they would proceed with legal action The person apologized, said sorry and said wont do it again. They let the person off with a warning but are monitoring his activities What are the odds of getting caught when everyone does it. Why go after the little fish who downloaded every now and than ? I ask because I use Torrents and I've been thinking twice before downloading anything. I haven't recieved anything but I also may be monitored. Download or stop ? Your thoughts please

It will be long before they start such things in India. MS considered getting strict with piracy in India and then decided against it. The problem is that once you get strict with Piracy in a place like India (with low purchasing power), people will start looking for freeware alternatives. And since MS's own products are not exactly perfect, they will let people use the pirated ones. The reason is explained below: Say A, B and C use pirated MS Office at home. So they are used to it, familiar with it and know how to use it. So when A, B and C go to office, they would demand and would be given MS Office on their computers. Now most corporates use genuine and legal software. So that ways MS is making money from the corporates because most of their employees are used to MS's products....even if from their own illegal copies. Now, if MS starts cracking down on illegal MS Office users, A, B and C will start looking for free alternatives (because they cant spend money) and will find OpenOffice.org.Then they will get used to OpenOffice.org and once that happens to a certain percentage of the employees, the company that employs them will be more than happy to replace MS Office with OpenOffice.org because it saves them money. So MS will lose business. So in India pirated software will run for sometime.

I recently brought a new HP laptop. The installed version of Microsoft Office is only trial and unless I buy the full version, I wont be able to use Excel, Word etc I thought about downloading the 2007 Microsoft Office from pirate bay, but not so sure now

Either get the original (unpirated) or use Open Office for free s/w.

Use private trackers. If you are downloading from public trackers such as piratebay, you will eventually get caught sometime. New games like Fifa 09, NBA 09 are the worst things to download from public trackers. I got a couple warnings from my ISP (in Canada), I just ignored them. Try not to use public trackers, to be safe.

thats why i use a rs acc
I agree :agree: I do not use my rapidshare account for downloading pirated softwares but I use it for uploading purposes and to download mainly pron files etc. with rapidshare that too once in a blue moon :winky: But I do not prefer piracy nowadays .. I used to use pirated softwares etc. previously but there are flaws and undetectable malwares in pirated softwares .. so I purchase most of the required softwares etc. nowadays because I do not want to risk security being a webmaster ... and most softwares have got very good free alternatives and I also use them if needed

So my question is If you get one of these warnings, do you stop or just download the same thing via rapid share or some other file hosting site ? When using rapid share, I noticed that large movies, applications etc are broken in 10 - 15 parts. So, you could download one part from library, one from computer pool etc and not worry about it

Change default torrent port, encrypt your torrent traffic and you'll be alright. Or use the Onion router. Regarding piracy in India, Jeffrey Archer was here last year to launch his brand new book(yet to be released). His car stopped at a traffic signal en route to the hotel where his book launch was. And what did he see there - A hawker selling copies of the very book which he was going to officially launch. :D
