Laaloo Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 Guys Ive been having problems with my Internet connection for the past 2 days. the Internet is on and off (hence i have to use meebo for yahoo and aim). I talked to my ISP provider (Verizon Online) and they said its been 4 years for me using the modem. They're telling me to get a new modem. But I dont think thats the problem. Some of the sites dont work for me. Like weather.com, download.com, etc. How can these be possible? Some sites work and others dont? (:nervous: My friend is having the same problem. I'm planning to buy this. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8360098&st=actiontec&type=product&id=1177717702530 But I dont think its worth the price.
EnterTheVoid Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 What kind of BS advice did your ISP provide? Some sites work, others don't so change your modem ? Time to change your ISP More likely a virus or spyware. I had the same problem. Some sites work, others dont. I used an ethernet cable to connect my modem to a router which than had different ethernet cables going off to my laptop, other computers within the house etc. And those sites that didn't work on my computer worked perfectly well on other computers
DomainK Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 It can happen at low connectivity. Some sites may work.
Laaloo Posted May 8, 2009 Author Posted May 8, 2009 Another thing thats messed up is that sites like foxsports.com works in IE and FF but not in chrome. That happens with other sites too. Im really busy right now with my exams so Ill have to wait a week to take it up with my ISP.

THX_1138 Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 update the firmware of your router, and do not use pppoe on your router even if the isp suggests so... use the modem in unbridged mode and use dhcp on the router.

I advise linksys or netgear router cum modem instead of actiontec .. your problems might be a malware related problem or speed related problem too .... scan your computer for malware with anti malware and also run a speed test... check if everything is ok or not
Laaloo Posted May 8, 2009 Author Posted May 8, 2009 I advise linksys or netgear router cum modem instead of actiontec .. your problems might be a malware related problem or speed related problem too .... scan your computer for malware with anti malware and also run a speed test... check if everything is ok or not speed is fine but the internet connection is on and off as I said earlier.
ViruRulez Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 speed is fine but the internet connection is on and off as I said earlier. if the internet connection is going on and off it might be intermittent connection problem ... if you ISP a DSL one ... if so tell them that you are facing intermittent connection problem They will do a line test and that should show them the results.. there seems to be a problem with the connection .. it is difficult to diagnose it right now because I do not have access to your ISP as intermittent connectivity might occur due to various reasons .. I advise you to contact your ISP and tell them you are facing intermittent connectivity problem.. they will send the technicians if reqd. .. ISPs might simply tell you to change the modem but let them run proper tests first.. anyways how can they tell problem with your modem just by sitting at their office.. it seems they are trying to make a fool of you if they are not carrying any line tests before saying a bad modem .. tell them to do line tests and check the reason for the intermittent connectivity problem
ViruRulez Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 also check the phone jacks and other devices etc. to check that they are not loose .. and if you are using a DSL line then also check if there is problem or noise in the phone line or is it clear
Laaloo Posted May 8, 2009 Author Posted May 8, 2009 phone line is perfectly working. There is no noise. They did a line test yesterday and they said everything was working perfectly at their end.
Laaloo Posted May 9, 2009 Author Posted May 9, 2009 Ok guys. Right now. I'm connected to someone elses Internet from my laptop. But the same sites are still not working. So is there anything wrong with my laptop?
ViruRulez Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 Ok guys. Right now. I'm connected to someone elses Internet from my laptop. But the same sites are still not working. So is there anything wrong with my laptop? Do you mean you are connecting through a different internet connection .. if the connectivity problems occurs from other connection too then it is a problem with your laptop IMO .. if it is a problem with your laptop then chances are that it is due to spyware or malware .. do a proper scan of your laptop using a good ani-malware/spyware ... most of these cases of not being able to browse particular sites are caused due to these spyware/malware if there is no problem with ISP

ViruRulez Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 yea im scanning with malware bytes now. lets see what happens. and were you connected to a seperate internet connection when you could not connect once again to the same sites
Laaloo Posted May 9, 2009 Author Posted May 9, 2009 and were you connected to a seperate internet connection when you could not connect once again to the same sites Thats right
ViruRulez Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 Thats right ok run malwarebytes and then check I would also advise you to post your problems at a very popular tech forum for such problems http://www.techguy.org/ They will be able to guide through the exact steps in case anti-spyware/malware does not solve the problem ...they are huge tech community there and I will advise you to post there too
Holysmoke Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 Some sites work and others dont? Tell your mom to disable netnanny.
